notes
  • There's a fair bit of contradiction in this one. NK/OH have David Fairbairn for the first, but GH/SC/SR all say it was William McDonald, and we're compelled to go with that majority contemporary view. NK/OH/GH/SR say Willie Paul made it 3-3, but SC says it was Willie Freebairn. Again, the majority view is most convincing, the SR editorial being persuasive. SC says Willie Paul made it 4-3, but NK/OH/GH/SR say it was Willie Freebairn and, again, we go with the majority. JL's non-sequential summary of McDonald (1), Paul (2), Freebairn (1) and Fairbairn (1) is impossible to square in any press report that we've seen and is probably best ignored on this occasion. Simplifying all the confusion, in the final analysis we've largely gone with the NK/OH report which gives a full account of the events, changing only the first scorer from Fairbairn to McDonald.
