Port's superiority saw them score 4 goals in the first half (16, 21, 22 and just on half-time). Freebairn scored (60) then Thistle hit the crossbar but despite their improved play they couldn't make any further impression. The forwards were “slow and lacked combination” (GT).

An unusually large number of spectators lined the ropes when the game started. Thistle kicked off, and throughout the first half of the game Athletic had the best of the play. Sixteen minutes from the commencement MacDougall scored first for Athletic. Five minutes later Smith obtained a second point, and a minute later scored a third. Before the change of ends Smith and Tarbet negotiated a fourth goal for Athletic, while Thistle failed to find an opening. After 15 minutes hard work in the second half Thistle scored their first goal, and a little later a shot for goal struck the cross-bar and went behind. The game to the close was well played by both teams, but no further scoring took place. Result:- Port Glasgow Athletic, 4; Partick Thistle, 1.
