In “boisterous weather” (SR) Thistle were well in control but had failed to score by half-time. Paul gave them the lead with a high shot (55). Keay increased the lead but Wanderers fought on and Proudfoot was a stalwart in defence but they could only manage one goal before the finish.

In season 1891-92 preliminary rounds were introduced to the Scottish Cup for the first time, designed to shield the top teams from the free-for-all that a first round of over 160 teams had been causing. From these rounds, 17 clubs came through to play in the 1st Round proper. 15 clubs were exempt from the qualifying rounds – the 12 League clubs plus Kilmarnock, Northern and Queen’s Park. Our Boys (Dundee) were offered exemption but declined it. Thistle’s first game in this new format was successful – a 2-1 derby victory away to Glasgow Wanderers.
