Both the NBDM list Paul at #9 for Northern; could it possibly a typo as it's repeating our #9? This theory is reinforced in the NBDM has a third variant of Mathewson (#6) and Mathieson (#11). For Thistle, there seems to be a problem in the other direction; the EC lists (the otherwise unheard of) McInnes at #9 in place of the expected Willie Paul. It's all very strange, but we stick with our stated position, taking the “best of both worlds”.

There was little between the teams. Northern were first to threaten and McCorkindale had several good saves. Thistle took the lead from a free-kick by Bennett but Northern pressed hard for a leveller and a mistake by Proudfoot let them in to score while the keeper was being “grassed“.
