Curiously, the GT report says that Thistle were missing 2 of their best players - Paterson and Inglis. It goes on to say that 2 excellent substitutes filled their places i.e. “A. Hamilton (Rangers) and Peter Ewing an old player”. Neither of the missing players was a keeper. We presume this is the same Peter Ewing who has been an outfield player since 1881. The SPM confirms that Maitland and Hamilton of Rangers guested for Thistle, explaining the replacements for the outfield players, and that Thistle were having a financial problem with their regular 'keeper at this time.

“Before a large turnout…including a number of ladies” (GT). Thistle had Hamilton and Maitland of Rangers guesting and went 1-up (3) but it was 1-1 (7) and 2-2 at half-time. Morton had some good spells of pressure in the second half and were unlucky but it was Thistle who got the goals that mattered.
