Martin |
Martin (forename unknown) was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The forward probably played only as a trialist for Thistle in April, 1883. He made his only known appearance on Saturday, 7th April, 1883, in a 3-0 friendly defeat away to Blackburn Olympic. There were no goals for Martin in his only known appearance for Thistle. His known club-list included only Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when Martin died. *

Thistle played against Blackburn Olympic 4 times in the 1880s and this wide forward, partnering Hugh Beaton in the 2-2-6 formation, played in the third of the four matches. 1,000 were at the Hole-i'-th-Wall on 7th April 1883 to see it. FA cup winners the previous Saturday, Olympic were reported to be sluggish due to the “convivial meetings” (AN) they had had to attend. Even so, 1-up at half-time and with 2 more goals towards the end, they were too good for Thistle who had their moments - especially playing downhill in the second half. The inverted commas for “Martin” (and indeed “Walsh”) in the AN suggests he may have been a trialist or guest. Who knows, perhaps he may even have been an English local? The SL report has him as "Martens" but was (provably) phonetically poor with names in general (for both teams), so a certain degree of caution is necessary. It's worth noting that we have an A. Marten from 1880, and a link there is not out of the question, we shall keep an open mind. |
