Derek Johnstone
● Derek Johnstone, 1986 (HA)

born in Scotland

Derek Joseph Johnstone was born on Wednesday, 4th November, 1953, in Dundee. He had one spell as manager at Firhill.

MANAGERIAL SPELL

(Mon-21-Jul-1986 ↔ Thu-05-Mar-1987; 227 days)

Things were looking promising with the second coming of Bertie Auld but, alas, a very promising future path was literally destroyed when new owner, Ken Bates, imposed Derek Johnstone as a player-coach, getting him off the Chelsea pay-roll at Thistle's expense. Getting wind of Johnstone's salary and perks, Bertie's assistant Mike Jackson quit and, 4 days later, Bertie did likewise, unhappy at having been undermined with regards to Johnstone's appointment in the first place. It was a somewhat bewildered Johnstone who then took on the role of Partick Thistle's first-ever player/manager. He had thought he was joining as a coach, but the resignation left him in an unexpected situation.

In reality, Johnstone was ill-equipped to be a manager, and the somewhat shambolic season which ensued came no surprise. As one Thistle fan put it, “the only good thing to come from DJ's short reign at Firhill was the birth of the Derek Johnstone's Red and Yellow Army' chant, stolen from West Ham and their Johnny Lyall's Claret and Blue Army.” Johnstone was sacked just 7 months into the job and never worked in professional football again.

Derek was in charge of Thistle, his only managed club, for 38 games in total.
