Liam Peter McFarlane was born on Tuesday, 26th September, 2004, in Lochgelly, Fife.

The 6' 6 goalkeeper temporarily transferred to Mark Wilson's Thistle on Friday, 17th July, 2026, from his parent club, Heart of Midlothian.

Aged 21, he made his debut appearance on Tuesday, 21st July, 2026, in a 2-2 draw at home to Stenhousemuir in the League Cup.

He kept his first clean-sheet on Saturday, 1st August, 2026, in a 1-0 win away to Greenock Morton in the SPFL Championship.

His club-list includes Heart of Midlothian, Brechin City, Montrose, Hamilton Academical, East Fife, Alloa Athletic and Partick Thistle.

He's contracted at Firhill until May, 2027.

As a Hearts Academy youngster, Liam had brief loan spells with Brechin City and Montrose before gaining valuable experience in the Lowland League with the Hearts B team in 2022. His real senior debut arrived as a 19-year-old in July 2024 when he joined Dick Campbell's East Fife on a season-long deal, opening with triple clean-sheets in the League Cup. He featured 39 times for the Fifers, a campaign which was ultimately rewarded with promotion to League One via the play-offs. He went on a similar adventure with Alloa Athletic for the 2025-26 season, albeit there was heartache in the end as the Wasps lost out to Stenhousemuir in the Championship play-off final. Alloa manager Andy Graham was full of praise, reckoning the youngster “has what it takes to get to the very top”, describing him as “the best goalkeeper in the league”.

A Scotland youth international, the U-21 internationalist earned the trip of a lifetime in the summer of 2026 when he joined up to train with Steve Clarke's senior squad for their World Cup preparations and travelled to the World Cup as a training goalkeeper. Continuing his progression, Liam signed up for a loan season with Partick Thistle for the duration of 2026-27. On 17 July 2026, head coach Mark Wilson had this to say:

We’re delighted to add Liam to our squad for this season. He’s a strong young keeper who has built up a good level of experience both out on loan and around the Scotland set-up. It’s a competitive area but he ticks all the boxes for what we’re looking for in a goalkeeper, so he’ll definitely be coming in to challenge for the number one spot.

Liam didn't have the best of luck in his debut on 21 July 2026, going down in the Thistle history books as the 'keeper with the quickest-ever penalty goal against in his opener, Stenhousemuir taking a spot-kick lead just 6 minutes in. Jags came back to draw 2-2 in the League Cup group match at Firhill, and Liam was powerless to prevent any of the 5 shoot-out penalties hitting the back of the net.
