  • Relegated St Mirren, together with promoted Partick Thistle (champions) and Arbroath (runners-up) were the new participants.
  • 3 pts for a win, 1 pt for a draw. Rules for classification: 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored.

  • Abbreviations (where necessary): P = Promoted; RES = Resigned; SUR = Survived via the resignation of Airdrieonians; R = Relegated.
  • Airdrieonians went out of business in May 2002 and their place in the Scottish League was taken by Gretna who were admitted to the Third Division. This ensured Falkirk's ongoing First Division status which would otherwise have been lost.
