notes
  • Relegated Raith Rovers, together with promoted Ayr United (champions) and Hamilton Academical (runners-up) were the new participants.
  • 3 pts for a win, 1 pt for a draw. Rules for classification: 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored.
  • Table per John Litster, data integrity verified by the Thistle Archive.
  • Abbreviations (where necessary): P = Promoted; R = Relegated.
  • With the advent of the new SPL, set to launch in 1998-99, only the First Division champion club is to be "invited" to join per season. So, it's back to 1 up / 1 down between the Top 2 Leagues. This arrangement lasts for 15 consecutive seasons of the SPL's existence, excepting season 1999-00 when there was no relegation and 2 were allowed up for the establishment of a 12 club format.
