  • As per 1986-87, Tiers 1 & 2 once again went 12-12 as opposed to the previous 10-14. As a result, nobody came down from last season's Premier Division.
  • Promoted Stirling Albion (champions) and Montrose (runners-up) were the new participants.
  • 2 pts for a win, 1 pt for a draw. Rules for classification: 1) Points; 2) Goal difference; 3) Goals scored.

  • Abbreviations (where necessary): P = Promoted; R = Relegated.
  • 2 up / 2 down is reinstated between the Top Leagues for the first time since 1984-85.
