  • 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. Drawn matches were to be concluded with a penalty shoot-out, the winner of which would earn a bonus point. Teams finishing level on points were placed in order of superior goal difference, then by goals scored.
  • Scotland's 5 European representatives were given a bye, and 3 non-League teams were included in the tournament. The 40 teams were split into two sub groups geographically, and seeded to ensure that top teams and lesser teams were drawn against each other across the 8 groups. 8 group winners and the 3 best runners up advanced to the round of 16 single-legged knockout phase, where they were joined by the 'big 5'.
