general notes
  • 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. Teams finishing level on points were placed in order of superior goal average.
  • Thistle were seeded in the top half of the group stage draw which pitted the top 16 from last season's top-flight against each other, thus ensuring that 4 'lesser' teams from the bottom half of the draw would qualify for the two-legged Quarter Finals.
  • Tabulated by The Thistle Archive by triple corroboration, using the match results published at Wikipedia and London Hearts before verifying them against our own database.
Stats Watch
  • By returning such a shocking goal average of 0.04, Thistle took the all-time tournament record which had rested with Stirling Albion (0.1) since 1956. Typically, the goal average criteria was retired from hereon, so the record is Thistle's eternally.
  • By scoring just 1 goal, Thistle equalled the tournament record set by Hamilton Academical (1949) and matched by Stirling Albion (1956). The class of '82 would later do their bit to remove this blemish from the club's history, keeping two clean-sheets against East Fife, as the men from Methil became the first Scottish club in history to finish a League Cup group stage goal-less (hypothetically a goal average of 0). Worse than East Fife? No' us!
  • Apart from Thistle, only two sides have ever conceded 25 goals or more in the League Cup group stages. Stranraer set the record (33) in 1957, and Montrose (29) had a good go at beating it in 1964.
