 John Wyllie was born in Culroy, South Ayrshire, although his date of birth remains unknown to us. * The forward signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Saturday, 21st October, 1933, having most recently been with Glenafton Athletic. He made his debut appearance on Saturday, 23rd December, 1933, in a 2-1 defeat at home to Hamilton Academical in the SFL First Division. That day, John became a member of our scoring debutant's club. He scored his third and final goal for the club on Saturday, 16th November, 1935, in a 3-3 draw away to Dundee in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for Thistle on Saturday, 8th February, 1936, in a 1-0 win at home to Heart of Midlothian in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 23 occasions. His club-list included Glenafton Athletic, Partick Thistle, Ayr United, Bury, Lincoln City, Notts County and Stranraer. We don't know where or when John died. *

 This Culroy-born inside right came through in Ayrshire with Glenafton Athletic and was involved at Thistle for 3 seasons from 1933-34 onwards. His undoubted highlight as a Jag came at the tail end of his second season. A 1-0 win over Rangers in the semi-final gave Thistle a crack at the Glasgow Charity Cup final and they made it count, defeating Queen's Park by 2 goals to 1 in front of almost 17,000 at Hampden. John - with his first goal for the club - scored the winner thus avoiding the counting of corner kicks for gold medals. It was only Thistle's third city cup - these successes didn't come easily in Glasgow. John was never a guaranteed first-pick and he spent some time on loan at Ayr United early in 1936. He made his first move into English football in January 1937 when he joined Second Division Bury, making his debut in and FA Cup 4th round tie at Burnley at the end of the month, Bury losing 4-1. It was to be his only appearance for The Shakers’ first team, and he joined Lincoln City in August 1937, remaining a season at Sincil Bank without making their first eleven. He joined Notts County in June 1938 and made two appearances for The Magpies in October 1938, before going on loan to Stranraer in 1939. However the outbreak of the Second World War effectively ended his career. |
