The 5' 9½ (11st 7lbs) defender signed for Bertie Auld's Thistle on Tuesday, 18th December, 1979, having most recently been with Coltness United. Aged 20, he made his debut appearance on Monday, 5th May, 1980, in a 1-0 win away to Hibernian in the SFL Premier Division. There were no goals for John during his time with Thistle. John signed for the club from Coltness in 1980 but did not become a regular until 1982. Playing either at left-back or centre-half he was one of Thistle's most consistent players in the mid-eighties, steady rather than spectacular.
