John Durnin was born on Saturday, 10th November, 1894, in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute.

The midfielder signed for George Easton's Thistle on Tuesday, 10th October, 1916, having most recently been with Plymouth Argyle.

Aged 21, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 14th October, 1916, in a 5-0 win at home to Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Football League.

There were no goals for John during his time with Thistle.

He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 12th May, 1917, in a 4-1 neutral-venue defeat against Queen's Park in the Glasgow Charity Cup, having appeared as a Jag on 26 occasions.

His club-list included Campbeltown Academical, Doncaster Rovers, Plymouth Argyle, Partick Thistle, Vale of Leven, Dumbarton, Swansea Town, Llandrindod Wells and Northampton Town.

John died on Tuesday, 27th June, 1967, in Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, aged 72.

Bio Extra

John joined the Jags as a 21-year old from Plymouth Argyle in October 1916. The FA had stopped competitive football in England during the 1st World War. He also played for Dumbarton during this period. Campbeltown-born John started his career with his local team Campbeltown Academical, and was signed by Doncaster Rovers, then moved to Plymouth Argyle in 1914. He played on 24 occasions for the Pilgrims before the outbreak of war. He joined Thistle on 10th October, and made his debut 4 days later. His first 3 matches were all comprehensive victories – 5-0 against Hamilton Academical, 6-0 against Dumbarton and 2-0 against Raith Rovers. Played 3, won 3, 13 goals for 0 goals against. (All SFL matches.) Reality set in after that. John played for Thistle on 26 occasions before moving to Vale of Leven then Dumbarton, where he turned out on 42 occasions.

Post-war he went back to Plymouth, then moved on to Swansea Town in July 1919. He played for Swansea for 4 years before becoming player-coach at Llandrindod Wells, and ended his playing career at Northampton Town in 1924. John passed away in Campbeltown, where he was born, in 1967 aged 72.
