![]() This midfielder was an amateur with Tollcross YMCA before turning junior with Maybole. He never made the breakthrough at senior level, although he had a few trial games in the Thistle reserves between November 1955 and February 1956. 4 days after turning out for the reserves against Hibs, Joe got a chance to play at Firhill in a fairly high profile midweek friendly against the Royal Scots in late November, 1955. That night, Thistle had several fringe players playing against the Army side which featured two current Jags. The origination of the Army side was: Andy Bell (Airdrieonians); Willie Polland (Raith Rovers); Frank Donlevy (Partick Thistle); Thorburn (Peebles Rovers); Ogden (Raith Rovers); Davie Mathers (Partick Thistle); Geoff Slingsby (Airdrieonians); Johnston (Ormiston Primrose); Hugh Gilmour (Irvine Meadow); Ally Miller (Third Lanark); Ally MacLeod (St Mirren); Brown (Heart of Midlothian). Trialist Alex Hastings scored for Thistle with a powerful 20-yarder (40) then Davie McParland made it 2-0 at half-time, but 4 goals in the 2nd half more than cancelled out a 2nd McParland goal. |
