Jered Stirling |
Jered Stirling was born on Wednesday, 13th October, 1976, in Stirling. The 6' 0 (11st 6lbs) defender signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Wednesday, 29th September, 1993, having most recently been with St Roch's. Aged 19, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 27th April, 1996, in a 4-2 defeat at home to Celtic in the SFL Premier Division. Jered scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 10th August, 1996, in a 3-1 win (aet) at home to Queen's Park in the Challenge Cup. He scored the last of his 17 goals on Saturday, 2nd May, 1998, in a 3-0 win away to Dundee in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 26th August, 2000, in a 1-1 draw at home to Berwick Rangers in the SFL Second Division, having appeared as a Jag on 83 occasions. Jered's club-list included St Roch's, Partick Thistle, Shettleston Juniors, Motherwell, Waterford United, Forfar Athletic, Stranraer, Albion Rovers, Clydebank, Ayr United, Raith Rovers, Elgin City, Montrose and Vale of Clyde. |
Stirling was deadly from penalty spot, the vast majority of his 16 goals coming via that avenue. Jerry possessed one of the finest left foots seen at Firhill for many a year. After progressing through the youth ranks he made his first team debut against Celtic near the end of the 95/96 season and impressed greatly winning the man of the match award. Kept his place in the team the following week at Hibs but missed both legs of the play-off with Dundee United. The following season he was one of the few successes as Thistle failed to return to the top division and he began the next campaign in dispute with the club. Eventually he signed a new contract but his form dipped as Thistle suffered another relegation. Like many others he was given a free transfer at the conclusion of the season and it was perhaps a little surprising that he was picked up by SPL Motherwell. Initially things went well for him at Fir Park but he left the club at the end of the season. Returned to Scotland after a spell in Ireland, and briefly returned to Firhill before joining Stranraer, then Albion Rovers. |
