James Anthony McKinstry was born on Tuesday, 3rd July, 1979, in Glasgow.

The 5' 10 (12st 1lbs) defender signed for John Lambie's Thistle on Wednesday, 23rd May, 2001, having most recently been with Clydebank.

Aged 22, he made his debut appearance on Wednesday, 18th July, 2001, in a 5-1 win at home to Alan Morgan Select in a Benefit match.

James scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 15th September, 2001, in a 3-0 win at home to Clyde in the SFL First Division.

He scored the last of his 3 goals on Thursday, 18th July, 2002, in a 2-0 friendly win away to Bangor.

He played his last game for the club on Wednesday, 26th March, 2003, in a 4-0 friendly win away to Montrose, having appeared as a Jag on 48 occasions.

James's club-list included Ipswich Town, Clydebank, Irvine Meadow XI, Partick Thistle, Dumbarton, Ayr United, Stranraer, Petershill and Vale of Clyde.

McKinstry was a defender who could play anywhere at the back as well as in midfield, and has a vast wealth of experience in the Scottish Football League, having played for Clydebank, Partick Thistle, Dumbarton and Ayr United, before moving to Stair Park to join Stranraer in the summer of 2007. He then turned out for the reformed Clydebank as a trialist, before signing with Petershill and then Vale of Clyde in the junior grade including an appearance in goal for the Vale as well as a testimonial against a Celtic XI in which he managed to miss a penalty during a 6-0 defeat.
