James McKechnie was born on Saturday, 15th April, 1899, in Bonhill, West Dunbartonshire.

The forward signed for George Easton's Thistle on Saturday, 22nd April, 1922, having most recently been with Mid Rhondda United.

Aged 23, he made his debut appearance on Wednesday, 26th April, 1922, in a 2-2 draw at home to Glasgow Select in a Benefit match.

James scored his only goal for Thistle on Saturday, 9th September, 1922, in a 2-1 win at home to Ayr United in the SFL First Division.

He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 18th November, 1922, in a 1-1 draw away to Motherwell in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 10 occasions.

His club-list included Duntocher Hibernian, Helensburgh, Luton Town, Manchester City, Mid Rhondda United, Partick Thistle, Hamilton Academical, Raith Rovers, Airdrieonians, Reading, Falkirk and East Stirlingshire.
