 James Gourlay was probably born in Scotland, although his place and date of birth remain unknown to us. * The goalkeeper signed for Thistle in February, 1898, having most recently been with Yoker Athletic. He made his first known appearance on Saturday, 26th February, 1898, in a 5-0 friendly defeat at home to Queen's Park. James kept his only known clean-sheet on Saturday, 14th January, 1899, in a 5-0 win at home to Irvine in the Scottish Cup. He played his last known game for the club on Wednesday, 3rd May, 1899, in a 4-0 defeat away to Queen's Park in the Glasgow League, having appeared for the Thistle on at least 18 occasions. His club-list included Yoker Athletic and Partick Thistle. We don't know where or when James died. *
