John Ian Spittal was born on Sunday, 14th February, 1965, in Glasgow. The 6' 1 (12st 0lbs) defender signed for Derek Johnstone's Thistle in August, 1986, having most recently been with Pollok. Aged 21, he made his debut appearance on Wednesday, 20th August, 1986, in a 1-0 defeat at home to East Fife in the League Cup. Ian scored his first goal for Thistle on Monday, 3rd August, 1987, in a 2-1 friendly defeat away to Baillieston Juniors. He scored his second and final goal for the club on Friday, 5th August, 1988, in a 3-2 friendly win away to Portadown. He played his last game for Thistle on Saturday, 1st October, 1988, in a 2-1 defeat away to St Johnstone in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 52 occasions. Ian's club-list included Pollok, Partick Thistle, Stranraer, Arbroath and Clyde. |
Tall and slightly-built centre half-cum-left back signed from Pollok Juniors in 1986. He played regularly in his first season and looked to have some potential as a ball-playing defender. However, a bad injury meant that he missed most of the following season, and in the subsequent season was unable to win his place back. In 1989 he left to join Stranraer. |
