Bio Extra

Hugh was another one of those players who started out as a forward but eventually fell back to the defence, left-back being his favoured position. He joined Rangers in his late teens, making his first-team debut on 9th October 1880 in a 1-1 home draw at Kinning Park against Thornliebank, but it wasn't until the beginning of 1883 that he started to feature consistently. By 1883-84 he was re-positioned as the left-back and from there he went from strength to strength. In January 1885 he represented Glasgow against Birmingham. Just two months later he earned his full international cap, appearing for Scotland in an 8-2 win over Ireland in front of 6,000 at Second Hampden Park. In a somewhat ironic twist-of-fate, Hugh's last game for Rangers came in a 4-1 defeat to Partick Thistle at Inchview on the 1st May, 1886. Co-incidence or not, the very next week he was back at Inchview, but this time in Thistle colours, guesting in a 4-2 win over Morton. Having seemingly fallen out of favour at Rangers by the end of 1885-86, Hugh was obviously on the lookout for a new home, and found it in Paisley, where he quickly assumed the role of club captain and had a succesful time of it, gaining winners medals in the local Cups. After four season with the Saints, Hugh retired from the game, and worked as a joiner in his Paisley hometown.
