Operation scrimmage
The “scrimmage” was victorianspeak for instances where two or more players would jostle/battle to affect direction of the ball. A great many goals were reported as being the result of a scrimmage whenever the scorer was indistinguishable in the melee. It's a matter of some regret that we classified these “scrimmage” goals alongside the genuine unknowns (see who scored?); with hindsight the scrimmage should have been treated as a category in its own right as it really helps to tell the story. We could probably reduce our unknown goals by 100 or more by applying the “scrimmage” description wherever applicable. If you have the patience, will and wherewithal to complete such a task then please do get in touch → for a chat and some pointers.
