Bio Extra

George's professional life was spent as a teacher, and the football always had to work around that. On the field, he was a very capable marksman and finished as Thistle's top scorer in 1935-36 with more than 20 goals to his credit. It was a surprise when he made the switch to Airdrie for the following campaign. George was involved with Stranraer in his final few playing seasons in the 1930s, albeit he seems have to have a bit of a flexible approach to his footballing activity. As well as guesting for Inverness Thistle on a numeber of occasions in 1937-38, he also obliged Stenhousemuir in late 1938. Serving up opportunuty for much confusion, George was joined at Stranraer by his ex-Thistle brother, John, for a brief spell at the start of 1939-40! George almost pulled off one of the biggest shocks of all-time when he scored for Stranraer in a 2-2 Scottish Cup draw vs. Partick Thistle in January 1938. Thankfully, he was refused absence of leave from the day job, and Thistle won the midweek afternoon replay by 8 goals to nil. The PGE (21/3/1962) reported that George had been appointed Rector of Langlands Approved School in Port Glasgow. He had formerly been Headmaster of Drummore Public School in Wigtownshire. Announcement of the appointment included a reference to him having played for Thistle and Airdrie.
