George Muir

• George Muir, 1967 (CBF) George Muir was born on Sunday, 21st January, 1940, in Stirling. The 5' 8 (10st 12lbs) defender signed for Davie Meiklejohn's Thistle circa Saturday, 26th July, 1958, having most recently been with Sauchie Juveniles. Aged 19, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 28th March, 1959, in a 3-2 defeat away to Dundee in the SFL First Division. George scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 18th February, 1961, in a 3-2 win at home to St Mirren in the SFL First Division. He scored the last of his 3 goals on Monday, 11th April, 1966, in a 2-1 win at home to Clyde in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for the club on Wednesday, 13th March, 1968, in a 1-0 win at home to Kilmarnock in the SFL First Division, having clocked up an impressive 269 appearances as a Jag. His club-list included Sauchie Juveniles, Partick Thistle and Dumbarton. George died on Monday, 13th December, 1999, in Stirling, aged 59.

1960 - GLASGOW CUP Mon-26-Sep-1960 [n] W2-0 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Final) Hampden. Unchanged for 5 consecutive games, Thistle were on the back foot for most of the game but Celtic missed several chances. Cunningham pounced on a poor clearance (72) then McParland ran through the defence and shot home (74). Freebairn had some tremendous saves and Wright excelled. Willie Thornton

1963 - SFL FIRST DIVISION Sat-11-May-1963 [a] D1-1 Dunfermline Athletic (SFL First Division - game 33) Whitelaw gave Thistle the best possible start with a goal from a Smith pass (1). It was mostly Thistle and he went close again when he beat the off-side trap. After they had a goal disallowed for a foul on Niven, Dunfermline equalised (55). After that they hemmed Thistle in but lacked a finishing touch. The “big freeze” derailed the title bid, but a highly credible 3rd place was confirmed 2 days later after Hearts lost 4-2 at Airdrie. 1966 - GLASGOW CUP Mon-07-Nov-1966 [a] L0-4 Celtic (Glasgow Cup Final) Celtic had 2 shots cleared off the line before they scored (12). Thistle plodded on but lacked speed and guile. A hooked shot from a free-kick (24), a glancing header (26) and a goal from close in (43) did the damage. Mercifully, Celtic eased off. “Cup cakewalk” (ET). Completely outclassed. Willie Thornton
