Bio Extra

There had been wins over second elevens or selects, but the Partick Thistle versus Queen's Park fixture in purely first-team terms had delivered 14 consecutive wins for the Spiders from 1881 to 1891. That all changed on 26th October 1895 when the Jags finally did the unthinkable and defeated the mighty Queen's Park - and by 5 goals to 1 at Hampden too! Thistle were keen to have another go but, for some strange reason, the fixture was avoided for another 2½ years but finally another meeting was arranged for Saturday, 26th February, 1898, and this time it would be at Meadowside. Could Thistle finally get the first home win too?

Unfortunately, Thistle were under-strength on the day and would pay the penalty. Left back Andy Wilson was one who was out injured and the committee sought a trialist from the juniors to take his place - that man was George McCulloch, who had recently turned out as a trialist for Hibs. He used the psuedonym "P. Hill" which was a direct clue as to his junior club I.D.! George, who had originally started out with the Ibrox XI (and was commonly referred to as "the young Drummond"), had been involved in trial games for Junior Scotland, so he came with a fair degree of reputation and there was some hope he might deliver.

It wasn't to be on the day however, and the big 3,000 crowd at Meadowside would leave disappointed that the home "bogey run" would continue. Thistle started well and had chances, but the forwards were poor and they trailed 1-0 at half-time. Queens were too good for them and rattled in 4 goals in the 2nd half. Auchincloss went off injured in the 2nd half but a substitute was allowed. Probably just as well. And that was that for George, he was back to the juniors with no deal offered.
