Thistle were flattered by the score. 2 defensive lapses by a tiring team helped their cause. They were far from impressive. Hainey scored (7) from a Hume pass then Yard hit the post but Glens equalised (38). Yard waltzed round 3 defenders to make it 2-1 (58). He scored again (74) and Wright made it 4-1 (78). |
AGG: 7-1. Another poor performance. It took 52 mins and a chorus of slow hand claps before Thistle scored when Smith turned in the box and shot home. He scored again from a Cowan cross (67). Glens had a couple of close attempts then Harvey scored from the spot (74) after Cowan was tripped. |
Playing excellent football, Yard headed in a McParland free-kick (12), Harvey scored (pen, 34) and Ferguson scored from 18 yards (51). Chances that should have built up a solid lead were squandered and regretted. Spartak tightened up after h-t, Thistle were less effective and conceded 2 goals from 2 breaks. |
AGG: 3-6. On a muddy pitch Brno played all the good football. McParland was prominent but generally Thistle's defence was no match for Brno's lively forwards. 4 goals (20, 28, 40 and 53) saw them through. Niven had some fine saves but spilled shots that led to 2 of the goals. The European dream was over. |

One slack piece of defending when Rough chose to stay on his line (44) was the difference between defeat and a fine away draw. Clark played as a sweeper behind McKinnon as the young Thistle side learned to sit in and contain yet their excellent play surprised Honved (who hit the woodwork twice). |
AGG: 0-4. Honved were much too good and were applauded generously at time-up. Rae went close then a shot from 18 yards shocked Thistle (9). Honved hit the bar before Coulston tested the keeper who was in brilliant form. A header (54) and a shot close in (61) completed the master class on defending and counter-attacking. |

43 days later…The kit was lost and hindered Thistle's preparations. They went 2-0 down in 7 mins but they were easily the better team and after Grant wasted a good chance McDonald headed in a Dinnie cross that had hit the post (31). A 25-yard strike by McWilliams levelled (62) but they couldn't find a winner. |
Thistle took the 1st half to come to life in the heat and trailed 1-0 at h-t but in the 2nd half they ran out clear winners. Craig's header put them level (52) then 2 goals by Smith (a right-foot shot, 69 and when he finished off good work by Grant, 81) put the tie beyond Keflavik. Onwards to Le Crunch in Metz! |
On an energy-sapping evening (80 degrees at 8pm) Thistle took some time to acclimatise and were lucky it was 0-0 at h-t. Metz scored (56) when a cross was rifled in. McWilliams rounded the keeper but hit the post as the team visibly wilted in the heat. There was no way back. Fine saves by Walker followed. |
Thistle were well beaten by a dirty, cynical team with lots of skill and pace. McDonald (reportedly homesick) came in for rough treatment from the crowd and retaliated with some gestures. Curran scored from just inside the box on his debut (84) but the game was lost following 2 goals (29 and 75). It was 3-3 in bookings. |
