![]() A towering centre half, Monan is best remembered for giving Ayr their only league win in a desperate 1966-67 season. After 28 games without victory, Eddie sunk a penalty to beat St Johnstone 1-0 on 8th April 1967 - the day 100/1 shot Foinavon won the Grand National. Eddie joined Ayr from Irvine Meadow and spent 4 full seasons as an Honest Man before a clerical error led to him signing for Partick Thistle! The story goes that Ayr forgot to add him to their retained list and an eagle-eyed Willie Thornton swooped in to sign the free agent in May 1968. As it turned out, it wasn't a great move for Eddie who went from being a first team regular at Somerset Park to wasting away for two full seasons as a Thistle Reserve. Exeter City manager Frank Broome was at Firhill to see Monan on 7 October 1968, but he was taken off early in the second half of the Reserve League game vs. Morton, suffering with a back injury, and nothing came of the interest. Two matches stand out in Eddie's first season - a record 0-12 defeat away to Celtic in the league cup in August, followed by a 3-1 league win away to the same team in November. Even the Reserves were great unpredictables! Eddie was freed from Firhill in April 1969, and featured 8 times for Queen of the South in their 1969-70 campaign before dropping out of the Scottish senior game. Sad news came through just before Christmas 1997 when the Ayrshire Post (19/12/1997) reported that he had died in Canada, aged just 53, having succumbed to cancer. He passed away in Ridge Meadows Hospital, Maple Ridge, as reported locally in the Province Newspaper. Eddie was survived by his wife, Carolyn, son Stuart, daughter Kylie, as well as 2 brothers and 2 sisters back in Scotland. Family and friends were invited to a celebration of Ed's life at 2pm on 1st December at the Meadow Gardens Golf Club, Pitt Meadows. |
