Bio Extra

Coming from Scottish Junior football with Rosewell, Joe made such an impression in the Newcastle reserves that he was likened to another 5ft 5in Scot - non other than Hughie Gallacher! Joe was very skillful, and displaying amazing trickery on the ball, soon netted 20 goals in his reserve team outings. He also demonstrated great leadership on the pitch. Soon he was considered a serious contender to take over Gallacher's shirt. Unfortunately a cruel twist of fate would rob football of what could have been a very special talent.

Breaking into the first team, Joe scored two goals in a friendly against Hearts and eagerly awaited his 'big chance'. It came with Jack Allen being injured and Joe making his full first team debut v Grimsby. Midway through the first half Joe collided heavily with the Grimsby goalkeeper Tommy Read who was diving at Joe's feet, both trying to collect a through-ball. Joe suffered a double fracture of his left leg. Joe ended up in hospital and then a nursing home. He spent a lot of time trying to regain fitness and get back into the first team but struggled to hold down even a reserve team place. He was eventually given a free transfer to Partick Thistle, then moved to Leith Athletic Club and ultimately had to retire from the game.
