Calum Sellars |
Calum Iain Sellars was born on Monday, 29th April, 1991, in Greater Glasgow. The defender signed for Ian McCall's Thistle on Tuesday, 12th August, 2008 (having already appeared as a youth), having most recently been with Partick Thistle U-19. Aged 16, he made his only appearance on Thursday, 26th July, 2007, in a 2-0 friendly win away to Albion Rovers. There were no goals for Calum in his one-off appearance for Thistle. Calum's club-list included only Partick Thistle. |
Ian McCall and Gardner Speirs were the management team who had recently taken charge of Thistle in the summer of 2007, and Calum, a full-back with the youth team, soon got a 20 minute run-out in the 6th pre-season friendly, replacing Stevie Murray with Jags leading Albion Rovers by 2 goals to nil at Cliftonhill. 550 were there to see the Thursday evening match, and two early goals from Liam Buchanan were enough to seal the comfortable win. Calum had recently just turned 16 and, at the time, he was the third-youngest ever to make an appearance in the Partick Thistle first team. Said assistant manager Speirs: “I am not going to single out anyone, but we had some smashing performances. We started brilliantly with two early goals, and but for their keeper it could have been a lot more. I also felt all of the trialists did well and we brought four of our Under-19 players on, including Calum Sellars who is only 15.” Despite this exceptional early breakthrough moment, Calum never progressed past the Partick Thistle youth or reserve teams, playing under apprenticeship terms throughout the 2008-09 season. At this point he opted instead to further his education by way of a business studies degree at the University of Glasgow, leading to a career in banking and finance. The 32-year-old married Emma Barrett in the springtime of 2023 in the bonnie village of Balquhidder in Perthshire. |
