William McGhie was born on Monday, 13th November, 1961, in Glasgow.

The 5' 10 (10st 7lbs) defender signed for Billy Lamont's Thistle circa Saturday, 13th June, 1987, having most recently been with Clydebank.

Aged 25, he made his debut appearance on Monday, 3rd August, 1987, in a 2-1 friendly defeat away to Baillieston Juniors.

Budgie scored his first goal for Thistle on Saturday, 6th August, 1988, in a 2-0 friendly win away to Ballymena United.

He scored his second and final goal for the club on Saturday, 20th August, 1988, in a 1-0 win away to Kilmarnock in the SFL First Division.

He played his last game for Thistle on Tuesday, 18th April, 1989, in a 1-0 win away to Queen's Park in the Glasgow Cup, having appeared as a Jag on 61 occasions.
