Bobby Smith |
Robert Nisbet Smith was born on Monday, 21st December, 1953, in Dalkeith, Midlothian. The 5' 7 (11st 2lbs) defender signed for John Lambie's Thistle circa Saturday, 1st July, 1989, having most recently been with Dunfermline Athletic. Aged 35, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 29th July, 1989, in a 2-1 friendly win at home to Colchester United. Bobby scored his first goal for Thistle on Sunday, 6th August, 1989, in a 3-1 friendly win away to Lossiemouth. He scored his second and final goal for the club on Saturday, 31st March, 1990, in a 4-0 win at home to Clydebank in the SFL First Division. He played his last game for Thistle on Saturday, 5th May, 1990, in a 1-1 draw at home to Raith Rovers in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 34 occasions. His club-list included Musselburgh Windsor, Hibernian, Leicester City, Peterborough United, Dunfermline Athletic, Partick Thistle and Berwick Rangers. Bobby died on Monday, 22nd February, 2010, in Edinburgh, aged 56. |
Man of many clubs, Bobby had been previously with Hibs, Leicester, Peterborough and Dunfermline before John Lambie brought him to Firhill in the summer of 1989. Signed as a stop-gap left back he did a good job, and despite his age he showed a good level of fitness. Although he only stayed at Firhill for one season his experience in the left back slot was invaluable as Thistle climbed to the top of the league in the early stages of the season. Scored one competitive goal in Thistle colours - a long range effort against Clydebank. Released at the end of the season, Bobby joined Berwick Rangers in the Second Division. |
