![]() The 18-year-old Bobby had been impressing at Bellshill Athletic in 1965 both in centre half and wing half roles. Willie Thornton brought the tall teenager to Firhill in early 1966 and he spent 15 months with the club, albeit with only a single appearance in the first team in the end up. He was freed in April 1967 and returned to the juniors with Larkhall Thistle. With the "other" Jags, Bobby enjoyed a magnificent run to the semi-finals of the Scottish Junior Cup in his first season. It was the club's best run in the competition since winning it twice at the beginning of the century. Some big names were eliminated (Darvel, Irvine Meadow, Bo’ness United, Inverurie Locos and Lochore Welfare) before Glenrothes, who were League and Fife Junior Cup winners that season, put an end to the run with an emphatic 4-0 semi-final win in front of 9,000 at East End Park. Following his succesful season back in the juniors with Larkhall Thistle, Bobby was hoping to be re-instated to the senior grade and, in April 1968, played with Raith Rovers reserves against Celtic as a trialist, but no deal materialised. |
