William Robertson McLaren was born on Monday, 7th June, 1948, in Glasgow.

The 5' 11 (12st 0lbs) defender signed for Benny Rooney's Thistle circa Saturday, 9th June, 1984, having most recently been with Queen of the South.

Aged 36, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 1st September, 1984, in a 3-0 win at home to Falkirk in the SFL First Division.

There were no goals for Billy during his spell with Thistle.

He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 29th September, 1984, in a 3-2 defeat away to Ayr United in the SFL First Division, having appeared as a Jag on 5 occasions.

Billy's club-list included Kirkintilloch Rob Roy, Dunfermline Athletic, East Fife, Raith Rovers, Queen of the South, Morton, Hibernian, Clyde and Partick Thistle.

Experienced player who had previously with Dunfermline, East Fife, Raith, Queen of the South, Morton, Hibs, and Clyde. He was brought to the club by Benny Rooney to coach. He was pressed into service when injuries hit the team, but was unable to last the pace in the First Division. Billy left the club to move into management.
