Bio Extra

A tall and well-built centre half, Bill played in the juniors with Cadzow St Annes and Blantyre Victoria before getting a late crack at the senior grade with Partick Thistle in 1921-22. He alternated between the first team and reserves at Thistle, with more wins than losses on his record. In the all-important top flight, wins against Kilmarnock, Clyde and Hibernian were offset with just a single loss to Falkirk. He also guested for Third Lanark in 1922, before making the radical decision to emigrate to the United States where he signed with Bethlehem Steel of the American Soccer League. Bill played eight seasons for Bethlehem Steel appearing in 264 games and leading the teams to the U.S. Open Cup in 1926, the ASL championship in 1927 and the Lewis Cup in 1928. He played centre half in their revered half-back line of McDonald, Carnihan and McGregor. His prowess was such that he captained the national team twice, firstly in a 6–1 win over Canada on 11 November 1925. That day, Bill made a bit of history by becoming the first Jag to win a full international cap outwith the British Isles. His second cap arrived almost exactly a year later, in a 6–2 win over Canada on 6 November 1926. An injury in March 1930 curtailed his season and worse was to follow when Bethlehem folded just a few months later. Bill moved to the Newark Americans for the fall 1930 and spring 1931 seasons. He then played one game with the New York Americans in the fall 1931 season before retiring.
