Bio Extra

In a manoeuvre typical of the wartime era, Thistle approached Kello Rovers with a view to acquiring the services of both their left half (Andy Nesbit) and inside left (James Halliday) for a Southern League match at Cathkin Park on 10th April 1943. With the Kirkconnel outfit having no game that weekend, the request was duly granted. How jolly decent of the Rovers.

It was “a moderate game of missed chances” said the Herald. Thirds took the lead with a fantastic free-kick from 40 yards (23) and they missed umpteen chances (including 3 sitters from 6 yards). Maurice Candlin scored (65) and a poor Thistle team, lacking any combined forward play, held on for an unlikely point.

Andy had a spell at St Johnstone, but Somerset Park would be the place he'd call home. He joined Ayr United in March 1946 and made over 250 appearances in his 8 season span at the club. 'The Honest Men' never did make it out of the second tier in all that time, 3rd place finishes in both 1950-51 and 1951-52 being particularly frustrating for all concerned.
