Andrew Rhodie |
![]() Andrew Rhodie was born on Monday, 3rd February, 1913, in Glasgow. The 5' 11 (12st 6lbs) defender signed for Donald Turner's Thistle on Tuesday, 27th February, 1940, having most recently been with Cowdenbeath. Aged 27, he made his debut appearance on Saturday, 2nd March, 1940, in a 1-1 draw away to Dundee United in the Emergency Cup. There were no goals for Andrew during his time with Thistle. He played his last game for the club on Saturday, 30th November, 1940, in a 0-0 draw at home to Hamilton Academical in the Southern League, having appeared as a Jag on 20 occasions. Andrew's club-list included Parkhead, Third Lanark, Cowdenbeath and Partick Thistle. Andrew died on Saturday, 28th December, 1985, in New Zealand, aged 72. |
![]() The 22-year-old Andrew finally made his step up from the junior grade in November 1935, moving from Parkhead to Third Lanark. Hardly made an impression on the first team in his three seasons at Cathkin, and moved to Cowdenbeath in the close season of 1938, where he was a near ever-present in their Division Two campaign of 1938-39. Was on the books at Central Park for the duration of the war, but played 20 times for Thistle in 1940 by consent, such was the rule relaxation of the day. His appearances seemed to dry up from 1941 onwards, so perhaps he served as a soldier? In March 1955, the 42-year-old Andrew departed for a new life in New Zealand, sailing from Southampton to Wellington on the Southern Cross ship. There, he continued his main line of work as a Printers Guillotine Operator. We know that he died in New Zealand, but we don't know the exact place of death, so if anyone does know, then please do get in touch. On account of his service during WWII, Andrew is included in our feature piece, The Partick Thistle Returned →. |
