The 142nd season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Tue-02-Aug-2016 [a] W5-0 Clyde (Challenge Cup 1st Round)
MP 6/8/2016. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, NISBET (3), McCarthy, McLAUGHLIN (2). (Fleming, Hall, Stokes (J).
351 saw Thistle dominate the match. All the goals came after h- t - although Lamont hit the post (13). Nisbet scored (51) then a McLaughlin shot hit Penrice on it's way in (65). Nisbet returned a parried save for 3-0 then Nisbet scored (75) before McLaughlin scored from close in.
2. Tue-16-Aug-2016 [h] L1-1 Queen's Park (Challenge Cup 2nd Round)
MP 27/8/2016. AET. Lost 5-6 on pens. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMULLIN, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, Nisbet, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J).)
Unchanged Thistle hit the post early on. They had most of the chances but the opener remained elusive. McMullin smashed home a corner (49). It looked like a narrow win until Queens scored (88). ET was goalless but Syme was sent off (foul). Ex-JAG Waters saved the vital pen then Clyde converted theirs.
3. Tue-23-Aug-2016 [a] W2-1 Dundee United (SPFL Development League)
MP 27/8/2016. Cullen, Elliott, Fleming, McInally, McMullin, Trialist, Lamont, Docherty, McDAID (2), McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Kelly, Wilson (C).)
Both teams looked dangerous but it was goalless until a fine passing move resulted in a shot from 20-yards. McCarthy brought out a good save soon after. Into the 2nd half Thistle broke in numbers and McDaid levelled from 20 yards. Last ditch blocks denied them until he scored again from the edge of the box (75).
4. Tue-30-Aug-2016 [h] D3-3 Hamilton Academical (SPFL Development League)
MP 10/9/2016. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMullin, Wilson, Elliott, McCarthy, McDAID, DOCHERTY (2), McLaughlin. (Wilson (C), Stokes (J).)
A desperate clearance by Syme prevented the opener then a 25-yard free-kick put Accies ahead (21). A looping header by Docherty put things level (25). Accies scored (28) and Docherty headed home before h-t. McDaid finished off a through ball but Accies equalised before Syme had another crucial clearance (87).
5. Tue-06-Sep-2016 [a] W3-1 Kilmarnock (SPFL Development League)
PTFC. Cullen, Stokes (I), Fleming, McInally, McMULLIN, WILSON (D), Lamont, Wilson (C), McDaid, DOCHERTY, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J).)
There were chances made and missed at both ends before Killie took the lead at a corner (16). Wilson levelled after a neat one-two (38) then McMullin rose highest to head Thistle into the lead (57). Docherty ran through and his shot hit a defender and looped over the keeper (81). Thistle finished on top looking for a fourth.
6. Tue-13-Sep-2016 [h] L2-3 St Johnstone (SPFL Development League)
MP 24/9/2016. Cullen, Elliott, Penrice, McInally, McMullin, Barton, Lamont, Wilson (D), McDAID, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (STOKES (J), Docherty, Wilson (C).)
Saints went ahead when Cullen dropped a deep cross and it was tucked away. Poor marking allowed a header for 2-0 (16). After some 2nd half chances Cullen's save kept Thistle in it then McDaid rounded the keeper (71). Saints scored again before a header by Stokes (J) reduced the lead. It was too late.
7. Mon-19-Sep-2016 [a] W1-0 Dunfermline Athletic (SPFL Development League)
MP 15/10/2016. Cullen, Stokes (I), Penrice, McInally, McMullin, McCarthy, Lamont, WILSON (C), McDaid, Docherty, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Higgins.)
Dunfermline (with several 1st XI players) "scored" twice (one a foul, one off-side) but Thistle settled and McLaughlin hit the bar. A poor throw-in was punished and Wilson scored the only goal (40). The 2nd half was a midfield slog although Thistle carved out several unproductive chances.
8. Tue-04-Oct-2016 [a] L2-4 Ross County (SPFL Development League)
PTFC. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMULLIN, Wilson (C), Lamont, DOCHERTY, McLaughlin, McCarthy, Stokes (J).
9. Fri-07-Oct-2016 [h] W1-0 Celtic (SPFL Development League)
MP 22/10/2016. Stuckmann, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMullin, Welsh, Lamont, Wilson, Nisbet, Fraser, McDAID. (Docherty.)
Wilson unselfishly set up McDaid for a tap-in (3). There were several good chances to add to the score but bad luck and good defending meant it was 1-0 at h-t. Celtic showed more urgency but solid defending kept them out and chances to add to the score weren't taken. Nisbet hit the bar late on.
10. Tue-18-Oct-2016 [h] W3-1 Heart of Midlothian (SPFL Development League)
PTFC. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMullin, McCarthy, LAMONT, Docherty, McDaid, Wilson (C), McLAUGHLIN (2). (Fleming.) At Airdrie FC.
Lamont, unmarked, finished off a McDaid cross at the back post for a dream start (1). They dominated the play and McLaughlin prodded home at the back post at a corner for 2-0 (38). Hearts fired in a partially cleared corner (80) but McLaughlin headed in a Lamont cross (90+3) for a convincing win.
11. Mon-24-Oct-2016 [a] W2-1 Dundee (SPFL Development League)
MP 4/11/2016. Cullen, STOKES (I), Penrice, McInally, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, NISBET, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J).)
Nisbet beat the off-side trap to slot home (7). Good chances came and went but after a combined move Stokes finished off from outside the box (42). The second half saw Thistle still on the front foot but with fewer chances. Poor defending at a corner let Dundee in (76) but Thistle held on.
12. Tue-01-Nov-2016 [h] L1-2 Motherwell (SPFL Development League)
MP 4/11/2016. Cullen, STOKES (I), Penrice, Syme, McMullin, McCarthy, Lamont, Docherty, McDaid, Wilson (C), McLaughlin.
It was all Motherwell and they took the lead with a tap-in at the back post (8). McDaid hit the post and Lamont tested the keeper. A shot from distance beat Cullen for a deserved 2-goal h-t lead. Stokes fired a cross/shot across the goal in off a defender for 2-1 (60) but Motherwell had the upper hand until the end.
13. Tue-08-Nov-2016 [a] L1-2 St Mirren (SPFL Development League)
MP 26/11/2016. Cullen, Stokes (I), Penrice, McInally, McMullin, Wilson (D), LAMONT, Docherty, Nisbet, Wilson (C), McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Trialist, McCarthy.)
Saints took the lead (5). From then until h-t Thistle bossed the game and Lamont shot home a rebound off the keeper. McLaughlin hit the woodwork twice in 60 seconds. A quick free-kick caught Thistle cold but they rallied and could consider themselves unlucky not to have taken a point.
14. Tue-15-Nov-2016 [h] W2-1 Falkirk (SPFL Development League)
MP 9/12/2016. Herd, McInally, Penrice, Trialist, McMullin, WILSON (C), Lamont, Docherty, McDaid, McCarthy, McLAUGHLIN. (Stokes (I), Fleming, Stokes (J).)
After a slow start Falkirk took the lead from the pen spot (15). A back-pedalling fingertip save denied Lamont an audacious 30-yard chipped goal. Falkirk hit the post after h-t but it was Thistle who scored through McLaughlin's rasping shot. Wilson slotted home in the dying minutes for 2-1.
15. Tue-22-Nov-2016 [a] D0-0 Rangers (SPFL Development League)
MP 9/12/2016. Cerny, McInally, Penrice, Syme, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, McDaid, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Herd, Stokes (J).)
Thistle weren't overawed by a much more experienced Rangers side who relied on shots from distance. Thistle just couldn't find that killer pass. The second half saw both defences on top with few chances created. Rangers clipped the bar then survived a penalty scare. It was Thistle's first 0-0 draw in 77 Dev Lge matches.
16. Tue-29-Nov-2016 [h] D2-2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPFL Development League)
MP 28/12/2016. Herd, McInally, Penrice, SYME, McMullin, Wilson (C), LAMONT, Wilson (D), McDaid, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Docherty.) At Airdrie FC.
Bottom of the league Inverness made the better start and scored from a cut-back (31). Play deteriorated after h-t but eventually Lamont drew Thistle level (70). An awkward bouncing ball was lifted over Herd to put the visitors ahead (75) but Syme grabbed the equaliser in the dying seconds.
17. Tue-06-Dec-2016 [a] W2-1 Aberdeen (SPFL Development League)
MP 28/12/2016. Cullen, McInally, Penrice, GRANGER, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, McLAUGHLIN, McCarthy, Stokes (I). (Stokes (J).)
Future-JAG Storey hit the post early on as Thistle were pushed back but they went ahead through McLaughlin (32). Aberdeen pressure was soaked up until h-t then Granger made it 2-0 at a corner (50). Stokes hit the post soon after. Thistle were comfortable containing Aberdeen who scored (80) but they saw the game out.
18. Tue-13-Dec-2016 [h] L0-3 Hibernian (SPFL Development League)
PTFC. Cullen, McInally, Fleming, Granger, Penrice, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, Nisbet, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Stokes (I).) At Airdrie FC.
Hibs (joint top with Thistle) took the lead when the defence failed to deal with a long ball (30) and went 2-up from close range (38). Thistle had better spells after h-t but Hibs always had more to offer and they made sure with a 6-yard header (83).
19. Wed-21-Dec-2016 [a] L1-2 Hamilton Academical (SPFL Development League)
PTFC. Herd, McInally, Penrice, Granger, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, McDAID, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Stokes (I).)
Neither side troubled the keepers until a loose ball was fired home from 16 yards (41). A harsh penalty put the Accies 2-up (51). The match got heated and the ref lost the plot then McDaid held off two defenders to reduce the lead (57). Thistle were on top to the end and were unlucky not to draw level.
20. Tue-17-Jan-2017 [h] W5-0 Kilmarnock (SPFL Development League)
MP 1/2/2017. Cullen, McInally, Fleming, Syme, Granger, Lamont, Stokes (I), Docherty, McDAID (pen), Wilson (C) McLAUGHLIN (4 - 1 pen). (Stokes (J), Kelly, Hall.) At Airdrie FC.
A foul on Wilson led to a penalty converted by McLaughlin (4) then he shot home a header back across goal by Syme for 2-0 (12). He made it a 12-minute hat-trick poking in a Lamont cross (16). McDaid's pen made it 4-0 (20). McLaughlin took a touch and slid the 5th past the keeper (65). Comprehensive!
21. Tue-24-Jan-2017 [a] L0-1 St Johnstone (SPFL Development League)
MP 1/2/2017. Cullen, Duncanson, Stokes (I), McInally, Lynch, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, McDaid, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Trialist, Hall.)
Thistle had the best of the few chances going in the first half but it was goalless at h-t. Bottom club St Johnstone were more adventurous after the break but even so, Cullen's first save was in 62 mins. Failure to deal with a corner led to a bouncing ball poked in for a scarcely deserved winner (87).
22. Mon-30-Jan-2017 [h] L1-3 Dunfermline Athletic (SPFL Development League)
MP 18/2/2017. Cullen, Stokes (I), Fleming, McInally, GRANGER, Wilson (C), Lamont, Docherty, Nisbet, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Stokes (J), Hall.) At Airdrie FC.
Thistle made a few chances and just as they got on top, injuries disrupted the formation. A header at a free-kick made it 1-0 at h-t. It was 2-0 just after the break and it was virtually one-way traffic with a third goal (75). To their credit the makeshift Thistle side got on the scoresheet with a 40-yard drive by Granger (80).
23. Tue-07-Feb-2017 [a] L2-5 Celtic (SPFL Development League)
MP 18/2/2017. Ridgers, Stokes (I), Fleming, Lynch, Grainger, McCarthy, Lamont, Wilson (C), Nisbet, McLAUGHLIN (2), Banton. (Stokes (J).)
Thistle, with two 16 and two 17-year-olds in the back 4, took a 2-goal lead at h-t through McLaughlin when he held off a defender and shot home then in a classic break finishing off a Nisbet pass. Celtic found a higher gear after h-t and their constant bombardment produced 5 goals without reply.
24. Tue-14-Feb-2017 [h] L2-6 Ross County (SPFL Development League)
MP 25/2/2017. Herd, Duncanson, Fleming, Lynch, Grainger, McCarthy, Lamont, Wilson (C), NISBET, McLAUGHLIN (pen), Banton. (Higgins, Hall.) At Airdrie FC.
2nd top County rushed to a 2-goal lead then a header at a free-kick made it 3 (33). Nisbet scored from a Duncanson cross (40) but they were caught for a fourth just on h-t. A race for a long ball was won for 5-1 (48). A penalty by McLaughlin (50) and one for Saints (70) finished the scoring. Both teams hit the post late on.
25. Tue-28-Feb-2017 [a] L1-5 Heart of Midlothian (SPFL Development League)
MP 11/3/2017. Cullen, Duncanson, Fleming, Granger, Kelly, McCarthy, Lamont, Wilson (C), Nisbet, McLAUGHLIN (pen), Stokes (J). (Stokes (I), Higgins, Hall.)
Hearts went ahead (5) then, when a Thistle attack fizzled out, they ran up the park and scored. Thistle had a couple of close efforts but it was 3-0 at h-t. A good run by Nisbet was unfairly halted and McLaughlin scored from the spot. Granger was red-carded (retaliation) and a couple more goals left the 10-men well beaten.
26. Tue-07-Mar-2017 [h] W3-0 Dundee (SPFL Development League)
MP 11/3/2017. Cullen, Duncanson, Fleming, Lynch, Stokes (I), Kelly, LAMONT, Docherty, NISBET (2), McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Wilson (C), Stokes (J), Hall.) At Airdrie FC.
A 7th straight defeat was avoided with a solid win. Thistle had the majority of chances but generally defences were on top. Nisbet fired home the opener (49). Dundee pressed for a spell but Lamont scored on the break (66) and a loose pass was punished by Nisbet (68).
27. Tue-14-Mar-2017 [a] W6-3 Motherwell (SPFL Development League)
MP 1/4/2017. Cullen, Duncanson, Fleming, Lynch, Stokes (I), Kelly, Lamont, DOCHERTY, NISBET, McCARTHY, McLAUGHLIN (3). (Wilson (C), Stokes (J), Higgins.)
2nd top Motherwell scored (6) but McLaughlin finished off a Docherty pass (8). The same players combined to put Thistle ahead (11) but a header put things level (14). McCarthy tapped home a Lamont shot off a post (22) and he headed home (38) then McLaughlin half-volleyed in for 5-2 (42). The 2nd half saw Nisbet scoring as did Motherwell.
28. Tue-28-Mar-2017 [a] L1-3 Falkirk (SPFL Development League)
MP 8/4/2017. Cullen, McCarthy, Fleming, Stokes (I), McMullin, WILSON (C), Duncanson, Lamont, Nisbet, McLaughlin, Trialist. (Stokes (J), Kelly, Higgins.)
A curling shot on the run put Falkirk ahead (5) thereafter it was even in play and chances until h-t. After a good spell by Thistle, Falkirk scored twice but Thistle got on the scoresheet when Wilson scored from a tight angle (87).
29. Mon-03-Apr-2017 [h] L2-3 Rangers (SPFL Development League)
MP 8/4/2017. Cullen, Stokes (I), Fleming, Granger, Kelly, Wilson (C), Lamont, McCarthy, NISBET, McLAUGHLIN, Stokes (J). Higgins, McInally. Airdrie FC.
There were chances at both ends then Rangers went 2-up (15 and 27). A great save denied Nisbet but he headed home to reduce the lead (52) then the keeper's feet denied McLaughlin. He did however make it 2-2 into the bottom corner (72) but failure to deal with a long ball out of defence was punished soon after.
30. Tue-11-Apr-2017 [a] W3-1 Inverness Caledonian Thistle (SPFL Development League)
MP 7/5/2017. Cullen, Stokes (I), Fleming, Granger, McMullin, WILSON (C), McInally, Lamont, NISBET, McLaughlin, Stokes (J). (HIGGINS, Hall, King.)
Caley went ahead (10) when cut-back was slid in from 6 yards. It was even after that. Nisbet hit the post then Wilson chased down a poor short goal-kick and scored on h-t. Play was stretched after h-t with chances at both ends. Nisbet scored (67) and Higgins punished another poor goal-kick (85).
31. Tue-18-Apr-2017 [h] W2-1 Aberdeen (SPFL Development League)
MP 7/5/2017. Cullen, Stokes (I), Fleming, Granger, McMullin, Wilson (C), Lamont, McCarthy, NISBET, Docherty, McLAUGHLIN. (Stokes (J), Higgins.) At Airdrie FC.
McLaughlin finished off a McCarthy pass (6) then Nisbet chased a long ball and nipped in between keeper and defender to score from a tight angle. The Dons scored within 30 seconds of the 2nd half then Nisbet was sent off (2nd yellow, 48). Aberdeen went down to ten (2nd yellow, dive). It was nervy at the end but Thistle held on.
32. Tue-25-Apr-2017 [a] L0-4 Hibernian (SPFL Development League)
MP 18/5/2017. Herd, Stokes (I), Fleming, Granger, Kelly, Wilson (C), Stokes (J), Docherty, Higgins, McCarthy, McLaughlin. (Fitzpatrick, Eadie, Duncanson.)
Herd pushed a header on to his crossbar (11) but Thistle were struggling. A header put Hibs ahead (16). Thistle had a good spell but they fell further behind with a tap-in when Herd blundered (35). In a rare attack Docherty hit the bar from 25 yards (55). A late penalty made it 3, poor defending made it 4.
33. Fri-28-Apr-2017 [h] W1-0 St Mirren (SPFL Development League)
MP 18/5/2017. Livesey, Duncanson, Fleming, Granger, Kelly, Eadie, Fitzpatrick, Wilson (C), McLaughlin, HIGGINS, Stokes (J). (Lynch, Smith, King.) Oriam Complex.
It was St Mirren who looked the more likely, indeed it was a surprise the first half was goalless. After so many missed chances, Thistle made them pay. Higgins got in behind the defence to slot home the only goal (59). McLaughlin was foiled by the keeper late on then St Mirren missed a great chance to level.
34. Tue-02-May-2017 [h] W4-2 Dundee United (SPFL Development League)
MP 21/5/2017. Livesey, McInally, Kelly, Lynch, Granger, Eadie, Duncanson, Smith, McLAUGHLIN (3 - 1 pen), Lamont, King. (STOKES (J), Fleming, Fitzpatrick.) At Airdrie FC.
King was bundled over and McLaughlin converted (35). Stokes headed in for 2-0 (63), United rueing their missed chances. McLaughlin finished a Fitzpatrick cross (67) then he lifted the ball over the keeper (72). Livesey misjudged a curling shot and a 2nd United goal (84) made for an anxious finish.
