2002-03 (Reserves)
The 128th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Tue-23-Jul-2002 [a] W3-1 Pollok (Friendly)
MP 3/8/2002. Pinkowski, McKinstry, Trialist, Thomson, Morris, McCALLUM, Lennon, DOLAN, Miller, GIBSON, Waddell. (Howie, Brand, Boyle, Docherty, Britton, Brawley.)
Dolan gave Thistle the lead from outside the area (20) them McCallum's free-kick doubled the lead (24). A low shot beat Pinkowski to reduce the lead but a neat back-heel by Gibson made it 3-1 (67).
2. Tue-06-Aug-2002 [a] L3-4 Bo'ness (Friendly)
MP 17/8/2002. Arthur, McCallum, Boyle, Lilley, Thomson, Waddell, BRITTON (2), Gibson, Lennon, Elliot, Trialist. *Morris is not listed by name but may have been the Trialist.
Thistle trailed 2-1 at half-time to goals 25 and 35, Morris* having scored to put Thistle in front (10). Britton levelled on the stroke of half-time. Slack defending let Bo'ness in for a third goal then a fine curling shot beat Arthur for 4-2. Britton made it look better from close range (85).
3. Mon-26-Aug-2002 [a] L1-6 Celtic (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 14/9/2002. Budinauckas, Brawley, McKinstry, Brand, Milne, Morris, Waddell, Howie, Trialist, Elliot, BRITTON.
A tough opening match and a big defeat against the eventual champions. The PTFC programme is rather frugal with its match report - perhaps just as well. Britton got on the scoresheet at both ends - one for Thistle and an og for Celtic to put them ahead.
4. Mon-02-Sep-2002 [h] L2-3 Dundee (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 14/9/2002. Pinkowski, Brand, Thomson, McDermott, MORRIS (2), Lennon, Walker, Howie, McLean, Charnley, McCallum.
A penalty conceded by Pinkowski was converted for 1-0 but two headers by Morris within 5 minutes gave Thistle a half-time lead. Dundee equalised (70 and went on to grab the winner (76), the scorer completing a hat-trick.
5. Mon-09-Sep-2002 [a] D1-1 Dundee United (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 14/9/2002. Budinauckas, Brand, Thomson, McDermott, Milne, Boyle, Charnley, Howie, McLean, MORRIS, Gibson.
Thistle started the better and were unlucky at times but it was goalless at half-time. United got the second half off to a scoring start but pressure paid off and a header by Morris (75) earned Thistle's first point in the competition.
6. Mon-16-Sep-2002 [h] L0-1 Dunfermline Athletic (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 28/9/2002. Pinkowski, Thomson, McKinstry, McDermott, Milne, Boyle, Charnley, Morris, McLean, Walker, Gibson. (Howie, Shields, Docherty.)
A header after 43 minutes was enough to take the points. Charnley was prominent throughout but apart from a disallowed "goal" by Boyle after half-time Thistle failed to take any of the chances they created. The Pars fielded 6 over-age players.
7. Mon-30-Sep-2002 [a] L0-3 Heart of Midlothian (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 19/10/2002. Budinauckas, Thomson, McKinstry, McDermott, Milne, Boyle, Dolan, Morris, Britton, McLean, Gibson. (Brand, Miller, Docherty.
Thistle were second best as Hearts ran out comfortable winners. A diving header (30) and a shot deflected past Budinauckas by Britton (41) put them 2-up at half-time. Lost possession by McDermott led to the third goal soon after the break.
8. Mon-07-Oct-2002 [h] W2-0 Hibernian (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 19/10/2002. Budinauckas, Thomson, Trialist, Dolan, Morris, McDermott, Charnley, McCallum, McLean, Gibson, WADDELL (2). (Brand, Boyle, Howie.)
Two goals by Waddell earned Thistle their first win of the season. Morris was stretchered off (34) and replaced by Boyle who, in turn, was carried off around the hour mark to be replaced by Howie.
9. Mon-21-Oct-2002 [a] L1-2 Kilmarnock (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 2/11/2002. Budinauckas, Brand, Thomson, Dolan, McDermott, McCallum, Charnley, Howie, DOCHERTY, Walker, Gibson. (Brawley, Rushford, Miller.)
A header by Docherty (72) looked to have put Thistle in a strong position but after Docherty was taken off (suspected broken shoulder) things went down hill. All 3 subs already used, a late goal and a penalty were conceded by the ten men.
10. Mon-28-Oct-2002 [h] W2-1 Livingston (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 23/11/2002 & 22/12/2002. CHARNLEY, GIBSON (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced.
Gibson gave Thistle an early lead converting a penalty and Charnley doubled it. Livingston scored for 2-1 but Thistle held on for all 3 points.
11. Mon-11-Nov-2002 [a] W3-1 Motherwell (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 23/11/2002. Budinauckas, Thomson, McDermott, Dolan, McKinstry, Howie, Charnley, WALKER, Elliot, Gibson, WADDELL. (Boyle, McCusker, SHIELDS.)
Goals by Walker and Waddell (14 and 31 respectively) put Thistle 2-up. Thistle were firmly on top but Motherwell fought back with a goal just after half-time. Sub Shields made sure the points stayed at Firhill.
12. Mon-25-Nov-2002 [h] L0-8 Rangers (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 30/11/2002. Budinauckas, Thomson, McDermott, Dolan, McKinstry, Howie, Charnley, Fleming, Gibson, Walker, Waddell. (Morris, Shields, Boyle.)
The scoreline tells its own story. Apart from the return of Fleming after his broken leg there were no positives to be taken from the match. Not at the races.
13. Mon-02-Dec-2002 [a] W2-1 St Johnstone (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 7/12/2002. Pinkowski, Thomson, McDermott, Dolan, Morris, Boyle, FLEMING, LENNON, Trialist, Miller, McCallum. (Howie, Brand, Brawley.)
A long-range shot put St Johnstone ahead (7) then Thistle went looking for an equaliser. It duly came from Lennon following a defensive mistake just before half-time. Both teams had chances but Fleming's lob over the keeper earned the points.
14. Mon-16-Dec-2002 [h] D2-2 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 29/12/2002. Budinauckas, Thomson, McDermott, Dolan, Morris, Lennon, Gibson, FLEMING, Trialist, ELLIOT, Waddell. (Boyle, Brawley.)
Elliot gave Thistle the lead (7) and it stayed 1-0 until bottom of the league Aberdeen equalised (70). A Fleming free-kick 5 minutes later seemed to have earned the points but the Dons came back again (82) to earn a point.
15. Mon-23-Dec-2002 [h] L1-3 Celtic (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 25/1/2003. Pinkowski, Buchan, Thomson, Brand, McKinstry, Fleming, Lennon, Morris, Gibson, Walker, WADDELL. (Boyle, Brawley, Shields.)
Top of the league Celtic took a 2-goal lead then Waddell scored for 2-1 when Brawley swung in a fine cross that was parried by the keeper and he was on hand to finish the move off. Pinkowski pulled down a player and the resulting penalty restored Celtic's 2-goal lead.
16. Wed-22-Jan-2003 [a] W2-1 Queen's Park (Friendly)
MP 28/1/2003. Pinkowski, Brand, SAMUELSSON, Thomson, James, Brawley, BOYLE, Charnley, Milne, Miller, Elliot. (Shields, Rushford, Docherty.)
Boyle gave Thistle the lead with a stunning free-kick but Queens equalised before half-time. Samuelsson's strike in the second half was enough to win this Wednesday night friendly at Lesser Hampden.
17. Mon-27-Jan-2003 [a] L0-1 Dundee (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 2/2/2003. Pinkowski, Brand, Thomson, Rushford, McCallum, Milne, Fleming, Boyle, Elliot, Shields, Brawley. (Howie, James, Miller.)
A solitary late goal earned the points for Dundee. They had a man sent off (71) and Thomson followed him 10 minutes later - both second yellows. Elliot went off injured and, all three subs already used, there was no way back for the depleted side.
18. Mon-10-Feb-2003 [a] W3-2 Dunfermline Athletic (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 1/3/2003. Budinauckas, Howie, Brand, Rushford, Milne, Waddell, Mitchell, Boyle, Walker, ELLIOT (3 - 1 pen), Trialist. (James, Gibson, Shields.) Dunfermline's home match but played at Firhill due to unplayable pitch in Dunfermline.
Things looked decidedly unfavourable as Thistle went 2-down by half-time. A hat-trick by Elliot -rounded the keeper (52), a header (67) and a penalty (83) - turned the points in Thistle's favour. All 5 goals were scored by the No 10s!
19. Mon-24-Feb-2003 [a] L1-2 Hibernian (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 1/3/2003. FLEMING. Line-up as yet unsourced.
An equaliser by Fleming (90) looked like salvaging a point from Easter Road but a penalty (90+2) put paid to that. Milne was sent off (two yellows).
20. Mon-03-Mar-2003 [h] D2-2 Kilmarnock (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 15/3/2003. Budinauckas, Howie, Rushford, Whyte, McKinstry, Miller, Fleming, Boyle, ELLIOT (2), Gibson, Brawley. (Pinkowski, Shields, Thomson.)
A Brawley cut-back was slotted home by Elliot (7) then he headed in a Fleming free-kick (9).Two goals for Killie (70 and 72) levelled things. Budinauckas was injured, Pinkowski came on. He was sent off for handling outside the area. Rushford was taken to hospital (severe bruising).
21. Mon-10-Mar-2003 [a] W1-0 Livingston (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 15/3/2003. Budinauckas, McKinstry, Thomson, Whyte, Ross, MILNE, Boyle, Howie, Walker, Gibson, Waddell. (Brand, Shields, Brawley.)
Milne headed in a Waddell cross (21) for the only goal. It was a tough, bruising match. Walker went close with a rasping drive before half-time. Several Rovers players were booked for over the top tackles and eventually Howie limped off.
22. Mon-17-Mar-2003 [h] W2-0 Motherwell (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 12/4/2003. Pinkowski, Thomson, McGowne, Whyte, Ross, MILLER, Boyle, Howie, Mitchell, GIBSON, Waddell. (Shields, Brawley, Docherty.)
Second-half goals 50 and 69 by Miller (headed in a Waddell free-kick) and Gibson (beat the off-side trap and rounded the keeper) won the points in a comfortable win.
23. Mon-24-Mar-2003 [h] W1-0 Dundee United (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 12/4/2003. Budinauckas, McKinstry, Thomson, Dolan, Milne, Howie, Boyle, Lennon, MILLER, Gibson, Waddell. (Shields, Brawley, Rushford.)
A goal by Miller (9) was enough to secure the points against Dundee who had ex-JAG Chiarini in their ranks.
24. Mon-07-Apr-2003 [a] L0-4 Rangers (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 26/4/2003. Pinkowski, McKinstry, Thomson, McGowne, Milne, Lennon, Boyle, Hardie, Gibson, Miller, Waddell. (McDonald, Howie, Brand.)
Thistle halved the deficit encountered on 25 November but the were second best to a strong Rangers team sitting second in the league behind Celtic.
25. Mon-14-Apr-2003 [h] W1-0 St Johnstone (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 26/4/2003. Budinauckas, LENNON, Milne, Rashford, McGowne, Fleming, Gibson, Miller, Docherty, Hardie, Shields. (James, McBride, Brawley.)
A goal by Lennon when he collected a Fleming pass, ran across the St Johnstone box and fired home proved to be the only goal. There were chances at both ends and Budinauckas had some fine saves to protect the points and his clean sheet.
26. Mon-28-Apr-2003 [h] W1-0 Heart of Midlothian (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 14/5/2003. Budinauckas, Thomson, Rushford, McGowne, Miller, Trialist, Lennon, Fleming, WADDELL, Walker, Docherty. (Boyle, Shields, Brawley.)
The goal came after half-time. Waddell (who had earlier run from inside his own half and seen his shot well saved), beat the off-side trap and pushed his rebounded shot off the post into the net. Milne's late header was cleared off the line but it didn't matter.
27. Mon-05-May-2003 [a] L1-4 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve U-21 League)
MP 14/5/2003. Budinauckas, McKinstry, Rushford, McGowne, Fleming, Waddell, Buchan, Lennon, Gibson, Shields, MILLER. (Thomson, Howie, McBride.)
Miller headed in a Shields cross (35) to cancel out an earlier goal but that was all Thistle could muster against an Aberdeen side with 6 1st XI regulars. It was 2-1 at half-time and 4-1 by the end. Gibson missed a late penalty.
