1994-95 (Reserves)
The 120th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. ?Tue-02-Aug-1994 [a] L0-1 Kilwinning Rangers (Friendly)
MP 16/8/1994. Nominal match date. Abbey Park. Arthur, Archibald, Gormill, Stirling, Clarke, Ramsay, Diamond, Docherty, Glancy, Hetherston, Wood. (West, Miller, McLachlan.)
Thistle started confidently against a more experienced side and went close twice but they trailed 1-0 at half-time. Second half substitutions made no appreciable difference and an equaliser wouldn't come. A blatant pen for hand-ball was seen by everyone but the ref.
2. Tue-09-Aug-1994 [a] L0-2 Gala Fairydean (Friendly)
MP 16/8/1994. Budd, McKee, Archibald, Stirling, Clarke, Docherty, Smith, Diamond, Gibson, Wood, Ayton.
Managed by ex-JAG Rae, Fairydean were the better team and won comfortably. Failure to make their early superiority count, Thistle went behind, ball watching, approaching half-time. A late second finished them off. It could have been more but Thistle enjoyed no luck in front of goal.
3. Thu-11-Aug-1994 [a] W4-1 Kilmarnock (Premier Reserve League)
MP 30/8/1994. Budd, McKee, Stirling, Clarke, Trialist, Wood, Diamond, DOCHERTY (2), GIBSON, CAMERON (pen), Henderson. (Ayton, Ramsay.)
Kilmarnock took the lead at a corner after half-time but a Cameron penalty levelled things. Docherty converted an Ayton cross then scored with an angled flick. Gibson took a delightful pass from Ayton to swerve a shot past the keeper. 4 goals in 5 minutes won the points.
4. Tue-23-Aug-1994 [a] D1-1 Rangers (Premier Reserve League)
MP 30/8/1994. Budd, McKee, Smith, Clarke, Trialist, Wood, Diamond, Law, Gibson, Cameron, Docherty. (Trialist, Ayton.) (1 og.)
Thistle had the best of things but it took until the second half to find the net when a Wood cross was turned into the net for an og (55). Chances went narrowly wide then on 70 mins Budd broke his leg in a collision with future-JAG McCulloch. Rangers equalised (86).
5. Tue-06-Sep-1994 [h] D2-2 Falkirk (Premier Reserve League)
MP 24/9/1994.GIBSON (2 - 1 pen). Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle trailed at half-time but it was no surprise when they equalised through a Gibson 20-yarder. His penalty (86) looked like securing a deserved win but a mistake between Stirling and Murdoch let in Falkirk for 2-2 in added time.
6. Wed-14-Sep-1994 [h] L0-3 Celtic (Premier Reserve League)
MP 24/9/1994. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included Smith.
The young Thistle side never really got going in this match. It was goalless at half-time. The second half saw poor defending gift Celtic at least two of their goals and they ran out comfortable winners.
7. Mon-19-Sep-1994 [h] W2-0 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve League)
MP 24/9/1994. Murdoch, McKee, Stirling, Smith, Clarke, Law, AYTON, Henderson, DOCHERTY, Sharkie, Ramsay. (Wood, McLachlan.)
There were close things at both ends then Sharkey set up Docherty for the opener (39). Aberdeen applied the pressure after half-time but the defence played well then Ayton was gifted possession and his shot went through the keeper's legs for 2-0 late on.
8. Thu-22-Sep-1994 [a] L0-4 Motherwell (Premier Reserve League)
MP 8/10/1994. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included Arthur, Ayton.
There was no denying it was a poor performance and there were few excuses. The referee did however deny Ayton a goal from 15-yards only for the referee to award a goal kick.
9. Wed-05-Oct-1994 [h] W3-2 Hibernian (Premier Reserve League)
MP 29/10/1994. CAMERON, GIBSON (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included English. Home fixture played at Hamilton Academical FC.
Hibs had not lost a goal in their first 6 matches but Thistle raced to a 3-goal lead at half-time. Cameron beat 3 men and shot across the keeper. Gibson at the back post made it 2 and he finished off a sweeping move soon after. Hibs dominated the 2nd half but couldn't find a third goal.
10. Sat-08-Oct-1994 [a] D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (Premier Reserve League)
MP 29/10/1994. LAW. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Chisholm and a trialist keeper.
Law strode forwards and fired home from 20 yards for the opener but poor marking at a free-kick left an unmarked striker to head home for 1-1.
11. Tue-18-Oct-1994 [h] W3-2 Dundee United (Premier Reserve League)
MP 29/10/1994. SMITH (3). Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Chisholm.
Second top United fielded three strikers from their clash with Thistle on the Saturday but the night belonged to Smith with his hat-trick including a shot from 18 yards (30) and a 25-yard free-kick (60). The defence stood up to United late pressure and restricted them to 2 goals. Up to 3rd.
12. Tue-25-Oct-1994 [h] W4-0 Kilmarnock (Premier Reserve League)
MP 3/12/1994. ENGLISH, DOCHERTY, TIERNEY, GRAY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Grant laid on a pass for English to give Thistle a half-time lead. It was one-way traffic apart from fine double save by Hutton. Tierney knocked in a blocked shot, Docherty got the third and Gray finished of a 15-pass move for the fourth.
13. Mon-31-Oct-1994 [a] W2-1 Falkirk (Premier Reserve League)
MP 3/12/1994. DOCHERTY, GLANCY. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included Charnley, Craig, and Cairns.
Docherty scored from 18 yards (34) then English hit the keeper's legs. Thistle were well on top and sub Glancy made it 2-0 when he beat a couple of defenders and cooly chipped the keeper. Docherty missed several sitters before Falkirk scored for a nervous finish.
14. Fri-11-Nov-1994 [h] W1-0 Rangers (Premier Reserve League)
MP 3/12/1994. DIAMOND. Line-up, as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Clarke, Glancy, Docherty. Home fixture played at Hamilton Academical FC.
Thistle side weren't overawed by 3 internationalists in the Rangers XI and ran out deserving winners. Diamond's poor corner came back out to him and he cut past 3 defenders to find the bottom corner. Glancy missed a chance, Rangers hit the bar and a save by Cairns was breathalf-timeaking.
15. Mon-21-Nov-1994 [a] W2-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League Cup 2nd Round)
MP 10/12/1994. DIAMOND, ENGLISH. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle were the better side but it wasn't until the second half they found the net when Diamond finished just inside the box (46). English scored close in soon after. They looked to be comfortable until Smith's og made it look closer than it was.
16. Wed-23-Nov-1994 [a] L1-2 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve League)
APJ 24/11 and MP 10/12/1994. Cairns, Byrne, LAW, Gray, Clark, Milne, Taylor, Smith, Docherty, Glancy, Ramsay. (Archibald, Ayton.)
Fine play by Thistle failed to produce a goal then when Byrne was nutmegged, the cross was tucked away. Cairns kept it at 1-0 with some fine saves. Law fired one into the bottom corner (43). Thistle's play was good until the end but they couldn't find a winner then Aberdeen scored on the break (90+1).
17. Tue-29-Nov-1994 [h] L1-2 Motherwell (Premier Reserve League)
MP 10/12/1994. AYTON. Line-up as yet unsourced. Home fixture played at Hamilton Academical FC.
Thistle played well for 20 minutes then a bad mistake by Clarke let in future-JAG Burns. A fine swerving 18-yarder made it 2-0 a minute later. Ayton rifled in an Ayton cross (60) but that's all Thistle could muster. Future-JAG McGrillen missed an open goal from 5 yards late on.
18. Mon-05-Dec-1994 [a] D1-1 Hibernian (Premier Reserve League)
MP 31/12/1994. GRANT. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Taylor, English, Gibson.
Thistle kicked off and went behind in 30 seconds! Cairns had a sting of fine saves to keep it at 1-0. Grant saw his 40-yard lob spectacularly cleared off the line but he scored just on half-time from a Taylor pass. Both keepers excelled after half-time and it remained 1-1.
19. Thu-08-Dec-1994 [a] L1-2 Dundee United (Premier Reserve League)
DC 9/12 and MP 31/12/1994.1994. Cairns. Law, Stirling, Taylor, Clark, Gray, Ayton, Docherty, GIBSON, English, Chisholm. (Glancy.)
United took the lead with a header then Thistle took the game to the homesters but none of their chances bore fruit until a downward header by Gibson finished off a fine passing move for 1-1 at half-time. More fine play followed but a goal wouldn't come and United headed home (85).
20. Wed-11-Jan-1995 [h] L0-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League Cup Quarter Final)
MP 21/1 and Aberdeen P& J 12/1/1995. Cairns, McKee, Milne, Gray, Tierney, Law, Byrne, Docherty, Grant, Gibson, Diamond.
A soft penalty gave Aberdeen the lead (8) after Cairns was deemed to have fouled a forward. A header at a corner before half-time put them in a commanding position. When Cairns blocked a shot the loose ball was tuned in for the 3rd goal. Given the level of experience in the line-up, it was disappointing.
21. Fri-13-Jan-1995 [a] L2-3 Rangers (Premier Reserve League)
MP 21/1/1995. Cairns, McKee, Law, Smith, Clarke, Milne, Byrne, Docherty, Grant, Gibson, AYTON (2). (Glancy, Chisholm.)
A header put Rangers ahead but Ayton drove forward and fired in an 18-yarder for 1-1 (30). Grant beat the off-side trap to cross for Ayton to volley home just on half-time. Several good chances to increase the lead were wasted and late goals turned a winning position into a defeat.
22. Wed-08-Feb-1995 [h] W1-0 Hibernian (Premier Reserve League)
MP 4/31995. Cairns, McKee, Milne, Gray, Clarke, Smith, Byrne, Docherty, Gibson, McWilliams, AYTON. (Glancy.) Home fixture played at Armadale Juniors FC.
Smith was denied by the post and, later, a magnificent save. Cairns had some good saves to keep it at 0-0 at half-time. Ayton headed in a Byrne cross for the only goal. On play, Thistle should have scored more. A late scare saw Hibs blast over from close in.
23. ?Wed-22-Feb-1995 [a] W2-0 Motherwell (Premier Reserve League)
MP 4/3/1995. Nominal match date. Cairns, McKee, Law, Smith, Tierney, Milne, Byrne, DOCHERTY, GIBSON, Glancy, Ayton. (Ramsay.)
On a wet and windy night Docherty stole the show - making the first goal and scoring the second. A drab first half was uneventful but Docherty's cross was swept home by Gibson (47) and he let fly from 25 yards (67) to secure all three points.
24. Wed-08-Mar-1995 [a] D1-1 Heart of Midlothian (Premier Reserve League)
MP 11/3/1995. Nominal match date. Cairns, Law, Milne, Docherty, Clarke, Trialist, Ayton, Ramsay, GRANT (pen), Gibson, Wood. (Chisholm, Archibald.)
Gibson was pulled down and Grant converted the penalty for 1-0 (11). On the half -hour Hearts equalised when Cairns looked to have been fouled at a corner but the clearance by Milne hit the scorer and went in. The bar rescued Thistle and a fine save denied Chisholm. 1-1 was fair.
25. ?Wed-15-Mar-1995 [a] L0-2 Celtic (Premier Reserve League)
MP 1/7/1995 in review of previous season's results says 0-2. No trace of this result. Nominal match date.
26. Mon-20-Mar-1995 [a] W2-0 Kilmarnock (Premier Reserve League)
MP 1/4/1995. Cairns, Law, Stirling, Smith, Clarke, Milne, Gibson, Docherty, McDONALD, Ramsay, Glancy. (Chisholm, AYTON.)
Thistle had the best of the first half, although Cairns had some good saves as well. An Ayton pass split the defence and McDonald chipped the keeper for 1-0 (65). An excellent 7-pass move up field was finished by Ayton when his volley hit the bar and he headed in the rebound.
27. Wed-22-Mar-1995 [h] D1-1 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve League)
MP 1/4/1995. Cairns, Law, Stirling, Woods, Clarke, Archibald, Ayton, DOCHERTY, McDonald, Gibson, Ramsay. (Hutton, Grant.) Home fixture played at Armadale Juniors FC.
A downward header by Docherty from a Wood cross gave Thistle the lead (8). Aberdeen had two attempts cleared off the line by Law then Clarke before half-time. Chances to go 2-up were missed then Cairns broke his nose in a collision. Sub keeper Hutton was beaten by a penalty (75).
28. Thu-30-Mar-1995 [a] L0-3 Celtic (Premier Reserve League)
MP 1/4/1995. Hutton, Law, Milne, Woods, Tierney, Clarke, Ayton, Docherty, Chisholm, Gibson, Ramsay. (Glancy.)
Poor defensive work allowed Celtic to go ahead with a glancing header. For much of the game Thistle matched a much more experienced Celtic team but as the game wore on they dominated and scored twice more. Ayton hit the post late on so there was no consolation.
29. Tue-04-Apr-1995 [h] D2-2 Falkirk (Premier Reserve League)
MP 18/4/1995. GIBSON, GRANT. Line-up as yet unsourced. Home fixture played at Armadale Juniors FC.
Gibson rounded the keeper and scored in the empty net early on. Thistle were decidedly the better team but Falkirk scored twice from a corner then a goalmouth scramble. Grant finished off a Smith pass for 2-2. Gibson dithered late on and a chance to score was wasted.
30. Wed-05-Apr-1995 [a] D0-0 Aberdeen (Premier Reserve League)
APJ 6/4/1995. Cairns, Dinnie, Stirling, Law, Clark, Milne, Glancy, Smith, Eli, Gibson, Ayton. (Archibald, Chisholm.)
A disappointing game in which there was little to report apart from Aberdeen (fielding a number of first team regulars) hitting the post early on. Dinnie and Milne strolled through the game which seemed to have been treated a "low-key".
31. Mon-10-Apr-1995 [h] L2-3 Motherwell (Premier Reserve League)
MP 18/4/1995. DOCHERTY, GIBSON. Line-up as yet unsourced. Home fixture played at Armadale Juniors FC.
A short pass-back by Law let in Motherwell to take the lead just on half-time. A 35-yarder in the top corner by Docherty levelled things then a low shot by Gibson made it 2-1. Poor marking at a free-kick led to a goal and in the dying minutes a cracking shot from 18 yards won the points for Motherwell.
