1990-91 (Reserves)
The 116th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Thu-02-Aug-1990 [a] W2-1 Armadale Thistle (Friendly)
MP 1/9/90. Nelson, Roche, Crowe, Love, Wyllie, Kennedy, Grainger, McConville, Gallagher, CRAIG, English. (SMITH (pen).)
Craig scored with a fine volley but the East Regional Juniors equalised with a spectacular one soon after. In the second half they missed a penalty and the resultant rebound before Smith converted his from the spot.
2. Tue-07-Aug-1990 [h] W2-1 Rangers (Friendly)
MP 1/9/90. At Caldercuilt Playing Field. PEEBLES. Per the pic (p32) Gordon Rae and Calum Campbell also played. First team away to Tarff same day.
3. Fri-17-Aug-1990 [a] D3-3 Queen's Park (Friendly)
HA. McGOVERN, ENGLISH, WYLIE.
4. Tue-04-Sep-1990 [a] W5-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 15/9/1990. Nelson, Kennedy, Craig, Love, Rae, McConville, Grainger, GALLAGHER, Campbell, McGOVERN (2), ENGLISH (2). (Troup, Lynas.)
Thistle had already been given too much space before English opened the scoring from 18 yards. Gallagher made it 2-0 at half-time. English tapped in a cut-back then Morton scored. Two goals from McGovern rounded off an easy win.
5. Sun-09-Sep-1990 [h] W2-0 Albion Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/9/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, Wylie, Kennedy, Peebles, Grainger, McConville, CAMPBELL, McGovern, ENGLISH. Played at Monklands Sports Centre.
Thistle had some early chances on a difficult surface but couldn't find the net at all. Rovers seldom threatened to score and the game wore on until finally a 20-yarder from English beat the static keeper (84). Campbell shot home a minute later just to make sure.
6. Mon-17-Sep-1990 [a] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/9/1990. Nelson, Roche, Craig, Peebles, Kennedy, McConville, Grainger, GALLAGHER, Campbell, McGovern, English. (Wylie, Troup.)
Gallagher harried a defender, won the ball and shot home but slack defending allowed Killie to level and then got on top. The second half was much the same. It was a case of containing the strong home team and settle for a point.
7. Tue-25-Sep-1990 [a] W1-0 Stranraer (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/10/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, O'Reilly, McConville, Mitchell, Duncan, Gallagher, McGOVERN, English, McLean. (Craig, Collins.)
A good team performance if lacking in goals. The experienced Queens side was difficult to break down and it wasn’t until mid-way through the 2nd half that McGovern's long-range left footer found its mark.
8. Sun-30-Sep-1990 [h] D2-2 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 20/10/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, Kennedy, Craig, Trialist, TRIALIST, Gallagher, McGovern, English, Charnley. (WYNNE, McConville.) Played at Maryhill Juniors FC.
There were lots of chances in the 1st half but trialist No 7 scored the only one taken with a volley close in. Poor defending let Dumbarton in then a blunder by the keeper let Wynne in for 2-1. A deflected free-kick late on earned the Sons a point.
9. Wed-10-Oct-1990 [a] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 3/11/1990. Nelson, Love, Trialist, Smith, Rae, Kennedy, Grainger, Charnley, McGlashan, English, McConville. (Troup, Annand.)
It was a midfield struggle in the first half. Rangers had the majority of chances but Nelson played well. English went close after half-time but full-time training began to tell and Thistle faded out of the game, conceding twice for their first defeat of the season.
10. Mon-22-Oct-1990 [a] W5-3 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 3/11/1990. Nelson, Love, Craig, Kennedy, Rae, Trialist, GRAINGER, Gallagher, McGLASHAN, ENGLISH (3), McConville. (Roche, Troup.)
Nelson palmed out a shot that was fired back in but McGlashan's diving header put things level by half-time. Poor defending let bottom of the league Queens score but a hat-trick by English put Thistle well on top before the defence was caught out again late on.
11. Mon-29-Oct-1990 [a] L1-4 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 17/11/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, O'Reilly, Craig, Armstrong, TRIALIST, Hendron, Annand, McConville, English. (Lynas, Grainger.)
Trialist No 7 took advantage of short pass-back to round the keeper and score but by then 3rd bottom Queens were 4-up and cruising. Thistle couldn’t match their selection with all but two of their squad with 1st XI experience. A defence mistake for the first didn't help.
12. Wed-31-Oct-1990 [a] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 1/12/1990. Nelson, Love, Craig, McConville, Kennedy, Armstrong, Trialist, Grainger, McGLASHAN, English, Gallagher.
Nelson failed to hold a header and Airdrie went 1-up (38 seconds) but Thistle recovered from the early setback and dominated the first half. McGlashan equalised after good work by McConville. Both teams went all out for a winner and Airdrie went closest but hit the bar.
13. Mon-05-Nov-1990 [a] L1-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/12/1990. Nelson, Roche, Crowe, Kennedy, Craig, Troup, Grainger, Wright, GALLAGHER, English, McConville. (Collins, Straiton.)
Given the level of 1st XI experience, this was a disappointment. English wasted a 1-on-1 but play was largely confined to midfield. A quick break after half-time put Ayr ahead then the lead was doubled. Gallagher scored late on but it wasn't enough.
14. Mon-19-Nov-1990 [a] L1-4 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/12/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, Craig, Kennedy, McConville, Trialist, Duncan, McGovern, English, Armstrong. (Grainger.) (1 og.)
A free header gave top of the league Clydebank an early lead then a deflected shot went over Nelson's head. A swerving corner caused an og. The second half saw Thistle the better side but a goal on the break increased the lead as did a very late fourth.
15. Wed-21-Nov-1990 [h] W6-1 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League Cup 1st Round)
MP 22/12/1990. Nelson, Love, TROUP, O'Reilly, Kennedy, McConville, GRAINGER, Trialist, McGOVERN (2), ENGLISH (2), Craig. (Annand, Smith.)
It was a case of missed chances until Troup, up with the forwards, opened the scoring. English and McConville made it 3 by half-time. The second half was one-way traffic with goals by Grainger, McGovern and English before a late consolation by 2nd bottom Queens.
16. Mon-26-Nov-1990 [h] L0-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/12/1990. Nelson, Love, Troup, Duffy, Kennedy, Armstrong, Grainger, Trialist, McGovern, English, Craig. (Roach, McConville.)
A decent performance against top of the league Celtic with their "stars" and 1st XI experience but ultimately class told. Nelson had some fine saves before a Duffy tackle led to a disputed penalty and it was 1-0. McGovern's volley went close but a shot Nelson failed to hold made it two.
17. Mon-03-Dec-1990 [a] D1-1 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 2/1/1991. Nelson, Love, Troup, Craig, Peebles, McConville, Grainger, Duncan (M), McLean, SMITH, Armstrong. (Mitchell, Collins.)
Thistle had most of the play but couldn't find the net. Inexperience was the main cause. Falkirk scored undeservedly with their first attack. Smith equalised in the second half and after a run of mixed results it was encouraging.
18. Mon-17-Dec-1990 [a] L1-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 12/1/1991. Nelson, Love, Trialist, Craig, Kennedy, McConville, Duncan, Peebles, McGovern, Troup, Gallagher. (Armstrong, ENGLISH.)
Thistle had the best of the play and chances but Hamilton were dangerous on the break. Poor marking let them in for the opener. Craig hit the bar after half-time then a fine free-kick round the wall made it 2-0. English forced the ball in at a corner late on.
19. Thu-17-Jan-1991 [h] L1-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 2/2/1991. Nelson, Love, Troup, O'Reilly, Kennedy, Duncan, Peebles, Gallagher, Craig, McGovern, Armstrong. (Grainger, McCONVILLE.) Played at Strathclyde Univ, Stepps.
On a frozen pitch, barely playable, Thistle lost Kennedy to injury early on and he was replaced by Grainger. Mid-table Clyde scored twice in three minutes after half-time. Sub McConville scored to reduce the lead but that was all Thistle managed.
20. Thu-24-Jan-1991 [h] D1-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 9/2/1991. Trialist, McKinnon, Trialist, Love, Crowe, Kennedy, Grainger, Duncan, Craig, McCONVILLE (pen), McAdam. Played at Strathclyde Univ, Stepps.
Neither team showed well on the artificial surface and both goals came from 12 yards. Otherwise, chances were few, Morton probably having the majority. The first penalty gave Morton the lead but McConville converted his on the stroke of half-time.
21. Sun-27-Jan-1991 [a] D1-1 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 2/3/1991. Trialist, Love, Troup, O'Reilly, Trialist, Kennedy, English, Duncan, Grainger, CRAIG (pen), McConville. (McAdam, Straiton.)
Both sides looked reluctant to get stuck in but Thistle probably had the better chances. Grainger "scored" but was ruled off-side. Dumbarton scored against the run of play (poor defending) but after being fouled, Craig converted his penalty for 1-1. The 2nd half was poor and uneventful.
22. Mon-25-Feb-1991 [h] W3-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 16/3/1991. Duncan, PEEBLES, Craig, O'Reilly, Kennedy, McConville, Grainger, Smith, Campbell, ENGLISH, CHARNLEY. (Troup, Lynas.) Played at Springburn Park.
Despite playing well and with Charnley directing proceedings, Thistle went behind after a corner wasn't cleared. Charnley's swerving 25-yard free-kick out wide deceived the keeper. Peebles beat the keeper with a low shot on half-time. The 2nd half was poor but English got the third.
23. Wed-06-Mar-1991 [h] L0-3 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 30/3/1991. Duncan, Love, Troup, Kennedy, Trialist, Duncan (M), Grainger, Smith, Trialist, Duncan (G), O'Reilly. (Botterill, Gavin.)
Ayr were 2-up at half-time, the first goal probably off-side and the second due to poor marking. There were a few close things for Thistle after half-time but in the last minute Ayr got their third - also off-side.
