1985-86 (Reserves) |
The 111th season of Partick Thistle F.C. |
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets | |
Tue-06-Aug-1985 [a] U?-? Troon Juniors (Friendly) |
– HA. Score/scorer(s)/line-up as yet unsourced. A programme was produced, the team listed as a "Partick Thistle XI". |
1. Wed-14-Aug-1985 [h] L2-3 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 31/8/1985. Trialist, McKenzie, Trialist, Stevens, McIntyre, Trialist, MULLEN, Trialist, GALLAGHER, McQuade, Dalziel. |
– A poor start saw an inexperienced Thistle team go behind (15) but they settled and Mullen scored with a header (35). Another header by Gallagher made it 2-1 (40). Two sloppy goals in the first 5 mins of the 2nd half turned the match around. Thistle dominated but it remained 2-3. |
2. Thu-22-Aug-1985 [a] W2-1 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 31/8/1985. Trialist, Trialist, Workman, McKenzie, McIntyre, Murray, Mullen, McDONALD, Gallagher, Trialist, McQuade. (1 og.) |
– A deflected shot put Hamilton 1-up (10) but a defender bizarrely lobbed his own keeper for 1-1 (30). The winner came from the spot from McDonald (40) after Mullen was sent tumbling in the box. A good 2nd half performance just lacked more goals. |
3. Mon-26-Aug-1985 [h] W4-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 14/9/1985. Trialist, Trialist, Workman, McKenzie, Stevens, McIntyre, Mullen, Trialist, KELLY, McQuade, GALLAGHER (3). |
– Gallagher squeezed in a McQuade shot (43) but it was the 2nd half that saw Thistle on top. Kelly smashed home a shot after a solo run (60), Gallagher headed home (65), Workman scored an og (73) then Gallagher completed his hat-trick (80) for a convincing win. |
4. Mon-02-Sep-1985 [a] D1-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 14/9/1985. Trialist, Trialist, Workman, McIntyre, Stevens, McKENZIE, Mullen, Trialist, Gallagher, McQuade, Trialist. |
– Two penalties resulted in a share of the points. McKenzie converted his when the keeper pulled down trialist No 11 (12). Chances were missed after half-time and Morton's penalty came 15 minutes from time. |
5. Wed-04-Sep-1985 [h] L2-3 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League Cup 1st Round) |
– GH 5/9/1985. McKENZIE (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. |
6. Wed-11-Sep-1985 [a] W2-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 21/9/1985. Kyle, McKenzie, Trialist, Stevens, McIntyre, Trialist, Law, McQuade, Carson, LOGAN, Gallagher. (KELLY.) |
– Thistle couldn't get a grip of the first half and Queens went ahead (20). The second half was much improved. Logan scored with a fine header then Gallagher scored with a deflected shot. Trialist No 6 "scored" but was deemed off-side. A measure of revenge for the previous week. |
7. Mon-16-Sep-1985 [h] W2-0 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/10/1985. Kyle, McKenzie, Workman, McIntyre, Trialist, Trialist, Murray, Law, Logan, Mullen, GALLAGHER (2). |
– Gallagher pounced on a short pass-back and gave the keeper no chance (10) then he doubled the lead when the keeper spilled a shot and he tucked the ball home (40). The second half was an anti-climax. Thistle were in no danger but couldn't find another goal. |
8. Mon-30-Sep-1985 [h] W2-1 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/10/1985. Trialist, McKenzie, McQuade, Stevens, Mackin, PATHAK, Law, Mullen, KELLY, McIntyre, Dalziel. |
– Pathak headed home a Dalziel cross (5) then Dalziel crashed a shot against the bar. Poor defending let in Kelly to turn and drive in a rising shot (17). Ayr came into the game more after half-time but it was the last minute before they reduced the leeway. |
9. Mon-07-Oct-1985 [a] D3-3 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 19/10/1985. Trialist, Trialist, McQuade, Law, Mackin, Murray, McIntyre, Dalziel, KELLY, Trialist, PATHAK (2). |
– Clyde went ahead from a soft penalty award (15) but a poor pass-back allowed Kelly to round the keeper and score (25). Pathak rode 4 tackles to slot home (38) but poor defending let in Clyde for 2-2 at half-time. Pathak scored again (78) but more poor defending and it was 3-3 (90). |
10. Mon-21-Oct-1985 [h] L1-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 9/11/1985. Brough, Donnelly (P), McQuade, Murray, Mackin, Mullen, Law, McDonald, Logan, GALLAGHER, Dalziel. |
– Hamilton scored a couple of goals just before half-time despite Thistle having the best of the half. Gallagher reduced the lead (54) but there was no equaliser to follow. |
11. Wed-23-Oct-1985 [a] D3-3 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 9/11/1985. Brough, Murray, McQuade, STEVENS, Mackin, Donnelly (P), Mullen, Law, GALLAGHER (2), Logan, Dalziel. (Trialist.) |
– Gallagher shot under the keeper for 1-0 (15) but Brough was well beaten (31). Two goals in the first 7 mins of the second half made for an uphill struggle but Gallagher got his second (75) and a minute later it was all square when poor defending at a corner let in Stevens. |
12. Wed-30-Oct-1985 [a] W3-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 9/11/1985. Brough, Donnelly (P), McQuade, Murray, Mackin, WATSON, Law, McINTYRE, Logan, Gallagher, Dalziel. (Mullen, Nelson. (1 og.) |
– A soft pen put Kilmarnock in front (10) but Watson drilled home the equaliser (20). McIntyre fired home after good work by Gallagher then a defender sliced the ball behind his keeper following a corner. Dominant play after half-time wasn't rewarded with more goals. |
13. Mon-04-Nov-1985 [h] W3-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 19/11/1985. Brough, Donnelly (P), McQUADE, Murray, Mackin, Pathak, Law, McIntyre, Kelly, GALLAGHER (2), Dalziel. (Mullen, Trialist.) |
– Poor marking at a corner led to Morton taking a surprise lead (33) but a few minutes later a long-range effort by McQuade made it 1-1. Gallagher fired home at a corner just on half-time and he scored again, also at a corner, this time with a header in the second half. |
14. Mon-18-Nov-1985 [a] L1-2 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 30/11/1985. Kyle, McQuade, Workman, McIntyre, Trialist, Law, Kelly, Mullen, Trialist, GALLAGHER, Dalziel. (Stevens.) |
– A scrappy goal at a goalmouth scramble gave bottom club Queens the lead. Gallagher "scored" but was incredibly ruled off-side then poor defending let Queens in again. Gallagher reduced the lead before half-time. Dalziel missed a penalty (88). |
15. Mon-25-Nov-1985 [h] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 14/12/1985. Brough, Trialist, McQuade, Murray, Mackin, Workman, MULLEN, Law, Kelly, Trialist, Dalziel. (Trialist.) |
– A neat goal by Mullen gave Thistle the lead midway through the first half but missed chances were to prove costly. Airdrie came more and more into the game and it was no surprise when they levelled (88). Championship hopes fading. |
16. Mon-02-Dec-1985 [a] L0-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 14/12/1985. Still, McQuade, Workman, Stevens, Mackin, Law, Mullen, Murray, Kelly, Trialist, Dalziel. |
– The feeling was that failing to use the strong wind in the first half would prove costly, and so it proved. Thistle held out for some time but two late goals - the second a penalty almost saved by Still - earned Ayr the points. Championship hopes disappeared. |
17. Mon-09-Dec-1985 [h] W2-1 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 28/12/1985. Brough, Trialist, Workman, Murray, Stevens, McDonald, MULLEN, Law, KELLY, Pathak, Dalziel. (McQuade.) |
– On a poor surface Thistle's poor form improved with this narrow win. Law missed a penalty before half-time. A long clearance by Brough was chased by Kelly and he slotted home (52). Mullen smashed home a Kelly cut-back (85) and a penalty was converted by Clyde (90). |
18. Mon-16-Dec-1985 [h] W4-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– GH 17/12/1985. McINTYRE (2), McQUADE, LOGAN. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
19. Mon-23-Dec-1985 [a] L1-3 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 1/2/1986. Still, Trialist, Workman, McIntyre, Mackin, Pathak, Logan, Law, Trialist McQuade, Dalziel. (KELLY, Mullen.) |
– Airdrie's fine display showed why they had been crowned champions. A harmless ball into the box was missed by everyone (1) then Dalziel hit the bar. A free-kick was fired home for 2-0. A fine solo effort by Kelly (75) gave Thistle some hope but a late header made it three. |
20. Tue-11-Mar-1986 [a] D2-2 Queen's Park (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 29/3/1986. Still, Spittal, Workman, Stevens, Walker, Pathak, Dalziel, Law, Trialist, McINTYRE (2), Gallagher. (Mullen, Trialist.) |
– Thistle dominated the early proceedings but fell behind to a shot that hit the post, rolled along the line and in (28). Worse followed with a shot from an oblique angle (38). A 2nd half transformation saw McIntyre score twice - from 20 yards then a penalty - to earn a point. |
21. Thu-13-Mar-1986 [a] D2-2 Morton (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 29/3/1986. Still, Spittal, Workman, Stevens, McIntyre, Pathak, MULLEN, McKenzie, Dalziel, Trialist, GALLAGHER. |
– Still parried a penalty but the taker followed up to score (43). The lead was doubled on the hour. Gallagher headed home (70) then Mullen scored from close in (74). Thistle went looking for a winner but it wasn’t to be. |
22. Mon-17-Mar-1986 [h] W3-2 Queen of the South (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 29/3/1986. Still, McKenzie, Workman, Spittal, Walker, McIntyre, Dalziel, Law, Mullen, PATHAK, GALLAGHER (2). (Trainer.) |
– Gallagher tucked away a through ball from McKenzie (10) but Queens converted a penalty (hand ball) (30). Law smashed a free-kick off the bar and Gallagher nodded home the rebound (63) then Pathak scored from close in (83). A powerful drive left Still helpless late on. |
23. Thu-27-Mar-1986 [a] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 9/4/1986. Still, Trialist, McQuade, McKENZIE, Spittal, Pathak, Mullen, Trialist, Kelly, Dalziel, Trialist. |
– A tale of three penalties. McKenzie converted the first (8) but a defensive slip let in Airdrie for 1-1 (31). Still dived left to save Airdrie's spot kick just on half-time then jumped high to push the ball over the bar for the other (46). Trialist No 8 was harshly sent off (70) but the 10 men held out. |
24. Tue-01-Apr-1986 [h] W2-1 Ayr United (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 9/4/1986. Brough, Trialist, Trialist, McKenzie, Spittal, McQuade, Pathak, Mullen, GALLAGHER (2), Trainer, Trialist. |
– A penalty for handling put Ayr ahead (20). The second half saw almost constant Thistle pressure and eventually Gallagher lobbed a Brough clearance over the keeper which hit the bar but he headed in the rebound (80). His second was a drive high into the net (84). |
25. Wed-09-Apr-1986 [a] W1-0 Clyde (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 26/4/1986. Trialist, Spittal, Trialist, Stevens, Mackin, Nelson, McQuade, McIntyre, Mullen, PATHAK, Trialist. |
– A goal by Pathak was enough to bring the points back to Firhill and put Thistle in with a decent chance of winning the West section of the competition. |
26. Mon-14-Apr-1986 [h] D2-2 Dumbarton (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 26/4/1986. Still, Trialist, Trialist, McKenzie, Stevens, McQuade, Mullen, TRIALIST, Gallagher, Donnelly, TRAINER. |
– Thistle threw away a silly point. McKenzie missed an early penalty but a low drive by Trainer put Thistle ahead at half-time. Dumbarton levelled just after the restart but trialist No 8 restored the lead. The points looked secure but sloppy play crept in and the Sons scored (85). |
27. Mon-21-Apr-1986 [h] D2-2 Kilmarnock (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 3/5/1986. Still, Trialist, Trialist, Stevens, Walker, McDonald, Mullen, TRIALIST, Kelly, McQUADE, Trainer. |
– Trialist No 8 tucked away a shot pass-back (10) but two goals by Kilmarnock (22 and 28) put a different slant on things. The second was a magnificent 25-yard free-kick. It seemed a lost cause until finally McQuade earned a point with just 7 minutes left. |
28. Mon-28-Apr-1986 [a] W3-1 Hamilton Academical (Supplementary Spring League) |
– MP 3/5/1986. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. Final Position: No table found, 13/18 pts. |
– Thistle maintained their unbeaten record but the win wasn't enough to reach the play-off with the East section. They were pipped at the post by Airdrie who won the competition. The two recent draws did the damage. |
