1976-77 (Reserves) |
The 102nd season of Partick Thistle F.C. |
scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets | |
1. Sat-14-Aug-1976 [h] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– MP 28/8/1976. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– The young Thistle side made little impression on the Rangers XI who had 6 players who had played at various levels for Scotland. The score was possibly a little harsh on Thistle. |
2. Tue-17-Aug-1976 [a] W3-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– MP 28/8/1976. MELROSE, WEIR, TRIALIST Line-up as yet unsourced. Trialist scorer was Goodall. |
– An entertaining and tight match. Goals by Melrose, Weir and Goodall gave Thistle a win at Hampden. |
3. Sat-21-Aug-1976 [a] L0-4 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– MP 28/8/1976. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Thistle never gave up but the strong Celtic side had class and polish and were too much to handle on the day. |
4. Tue-24-Aug-1976 [h] W2-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– MP 28/8/1976. KELLY, GIBSON. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Queens shocked Thistle by taking an early lead but they gradually got their act together and goals by Kelly and Gibson made it a double over them in the section. |
5. Sat-28-Aug-1976 [a] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– AEE 28/8/1976. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
6. Mon-30-Aug-1976 [h] L0-1 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game) |
– SFHA. Line-up as yet unsourced. Final Position: 3rd of 4, 4/12 pts. |
7. Sat-04-Sep-1976 [a] W3-1 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 18/9/1976. KELLY (2), FRAME. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Young "S" form keeper Maxwell was beaten by an early penalty but two goals by Kelly put Thistle ahead and substitute Frame added a third near the end to get the league campaign off to a good start. |
8. Sat-11-Sep-1976 [h] W1-0 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 18/9/1976. KELLY. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– An exciting tussle and Thomson was a busy keeper in the first half. After half-time it was the turn of the Hearts keeper who kept it goalless until after he had a few close efforts, Kelly scored two minutes from time. |
9. Fri-17-Sep-1976 [a] W3-2 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 18/9/1976. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. |
10. Fri-24-Sep-1976 [h] D1-1 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 2/10/1976. KELLY. Line-up as yet unsourced but also included Thomson, Anderson, Westwater (sub) and Trialist (No 9). |
– Thistle had all the early pressure but they were caught out when a shot-cum-cross that looked to be going over, dipped, hit the bar and went in. Kelly levelled things before h-t when he cut past several defenders and cracked home a low grounder. Chances were missed towards the end. |
11. Sat-02-Oct-1976 [a] L1-4 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 2/10/1976. Thomson, Gray, Kellachan, Newman, McIntosh, Westwater, Weir, Kirkpatrick, Frame, McQueen, KELLY. (Leslie.) |
– Open and entertaining from the start. Aberdeen went ahead through a ruck of players close in (7) then Weir split the defence for Kelly to score from 28 yards (9). A deflected shot off McIntosh gave Aberdeen a half-time lead. Thistle's good spells became less frequent and goals 51 and 85 (a pen) made it 4-1 - but slightly flattering on the Dons. |
12. Sat-09-Oct-1976 [h] W4-1 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 23/10/1976. GIBSON, HANSEN (J), KELLACHAN, FRAME. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Celtic commanded the early play but Thistle took over the midfield and were good value for the first goal from a penetrating run and shot by Gibson. Hansen and Kellachan made it 3 by half-time and Frame made it 4 before Celtic scored. |
13. Sat-16-Oct-1976 [h] W6-0 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 23/10/1976. KELLY (4), CRAIG (JOHN) (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Kelly rammed home a Weir cross (1). He was unstoppable and gained a hat-trick by half-time. He made it 4 with a spectacular goal virtually from the restart. Craig added 2 more for an impressive win against a Hibs side that seldom threatened. |
14. Sat-23-Oct-1976 [a] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 30/10/1976. MACKIE. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Against the gale Thistle played some good football, Kellachan particularly prominent on the overlap. Mackie cut through Killie's defence to lob the keeper for 1-0. The gale at their backs after half-time proved to be a handicap. Rather against the run of play a soft penalty earned Killie a fortunate point. |
15. Sat-30-Oct-1976 [a] L1-3 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 30/10/1976. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
16. Sat-13-Nov-1976 [a] L1-2 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 13/11/1976. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
17. Sat-20-Nov-1976 [a] W3-1 Dundee (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 27/11/1976. MELROSE, KELLY, WEIR. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Thistle soaked up a lot of pressure to keep it goalless at half-time. Confident close passing was the order of the 2nd half and it brought rewards through Melrose close in, Kelly finishing off a fine move and a Weir pen before Dundee's late strike. |
18. Mon-29-Nov-1976 [a] L1-3 Celtic (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round) |
– MP11/12/1976. BROGAN. Line-up as yet unsourced. First round bye. |
– Celtic had most of the possession and chances but Thistle attacked well on the break. Chances were missed however and only Brogan found the net. |
19. Thu-16-Dec-1976 [a] L1-3 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 17/12/1976. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
20. Thu-23-Dec-1976 [h] D1-1 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 24/12/1976. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
21. Sat-08-Jan-1977 [h] W3-1 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 8/1/1977. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. |
22. Sat-29-Jan-1977 [h] W2-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MT 4/2/1977. McQUADE (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– McQuade was a constant problem for the Motherwell defence. On a bone-hard pitch he chested down the ball and lobbed the advancing keeper (20). Four minutes later he finished off a Johnston cross. A deflected shot off Anderson reduced the lead then a fine save by Maxwell meant Thistle held on for the win. |
23. Mon-07-Feb-1977 [a] L0-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 8/2/1977. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
24. Sat-12-Feb-1977 [h] W3-2 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 12/2/1977. Thomson, BROGAN, Kellachan, Fitzpatrick, Westwater, Gibson, Weir, McQueen, McQuade, McDonald, KELLY (2). |
– Aberdeen went ahead on merit (10) and it could have been worse on pressure. A fine shot by Brogan on a tight angle made it 1-1 (35). A foul on Kelly saw Aberdeen reduced to 10 men just on half-time. A Kelly double (65 and 87) put Thistle well ahead only for a consolation strike (88). |
25. Tue-15-Feb-1977 [a] W2-1 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 16/2/1977. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. |
26. Mon-21-Feb-1977 [a] L0-2 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/3/1977. Line-up as yet unsourced. Lisbon Lion Wallace guested for Thistle in this and in the following fixture. |
– Probably the worst form of the season. Thistle could hardly string two passes together. Airdrie went ahead then Weir saw his penalty saved. Restricting Airdrie to 2-0 was the only crumb of comfort. |
27. Sat-26-Feb-1977 [h] W3-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 5/3/1977. KELLY, JOHNSTON (2). Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– For all their first half superiority Thistle couldn't find the net. A cracking goal by Kelly after half-time opened for Thistle then Johnston finished off a Kelly shot the keeper failed to hold. He went on to stroll past a number of defenders and score his second. |
28. Mon-07-Mar-1977 [h] W6-5 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League) |
– GH 8/3/1977. KELLY (4), NEWMAN, GIBSON. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
29. Sat-12-Mar-1977 [h] W3-0 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 12/3/1977. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. SFHA says 3-1, but AEE says 3-0. Nothing else found that would help either way. We've gone with 3-0 per the contemporary source in the meantime. |
30. Sat-19-Mar-1977 [h] W1-0 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 26/3/1977. KELLY. Line-up as yet unsourced but also included Brogan, Houston and Weir. |
– The young, talented, United team seemed to find the heavy ground not to their liking whereas Thistle (Brogan in particular) revelled in the conditions. The only goal came late on when Weir broke through and Kelly headed home his cross for a fine win. |
31. Tue-22-Mar-1977 [h] D0-0 Clydebank (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 26/3/1977. Line-up as yet unsourced but included Craig. |
– Against an experienced Clydebank team, this was a dour midfield struggle with only occasional forays up field by either team. |
32. Sat-26-Mar-1977 [a] W4-2 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 30/3/1977. KELLY (2, inc. 1 pen), JOHNSTON, BROGAN. |
– Fortunes swayed in an exciting 1st half. Kelly scored twice, the 2nd a penalty but Rovers levelled before half-time. Thistle took command after half-time and Brogan restored the lead then Johnston finished off a comfortable win. |
33. Sat-02-Apr-1977 [h] L1-2 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 9/4/1977. McQUEEN. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– Thistle's first league defeat of the season. McQueen scored to give them the lead - deservedly so on play - but after h-t Rovers quickly equalised and they deserved their winner late on. |
34. Mon-04-Apr-1977 [h] D1-1 Dundee (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 9/4/1977. BROGAN. Line-up as yet unsourced. This match was abandoned 47 mins (floodlight failure) but result stood. |
– It was an entertaining match, while it lasted! Brogan gave Thistle the lead after 10 mins but honours were even and Dundee levelled just before the break. |
35. Sat-09-Apr-1977 [a] W2-1 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 23/4/1977. McQUEEN, KELLY (pen). Line-up as yet unsourced. |
36. Sat-16-Apr-1977 [a] L1-2 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 23/4/1977. WEIR. Line-up as yet unsourced. SFHA grid (1-1) is wrong. |
– Seemingly overawed on the big pitch and in an empty stadium, Thistle turned in a poor performance. Queens went ahead then missed a penalty. Thistle hung on however and Weir equalised. A mistake after half-time led to a simple goal and winner. |
37. Tue-19-Apr-1977 [a] D3-3 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 23/4/1977. Line-up and scorers yet unsourced. |
38. Wed-20-Apr-1977 [h] D0-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 21/4/1977. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
39. Thu-21-Apr-1977 [a] L2-3 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League) |
– APJ 22/4/1977. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. |
40. Tue-26-Apr-1977 [h] L3-4 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– MP 30/4/1977. NEWMAN, KELLY, JUNIOR. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
– An exciting free scoring match in which Dumbarton always seemed to have that bit more to offer. They took a 2-goal lead but Thistle pegged them back to 1-2, then 2-3 and 3-4. They never managed to equalise or take the lead.. |
41. Sat-30-Apr-1977 [a] L0-2 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League) |
– AEE 30/4/1977. Line-up as yet unsourced. |
