scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-12-Aug-1972 [h] W5-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
ET 12/8/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
2. Tue-15-Aug-1972 [a] L0-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
ET 15/8/1972 (from) Wright, Gray, McKinnon, Kellachan, Ralston, Docherty, Houston, Stamp, McDowell, Craig, Lochrie, Mullin.
3. Sat-19-Aug-1972 [h] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 26/8/1972. STAMP. Line-up as yet unsourced.
In the 1st half both teams tried and failed to establish their superiority. Kilmarnock took the lead but in a storming finish 6' 3" Stamp tied the scores.
4. Tue-22-Aug-1972 [h] D3-3 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
MP 26/8/1972. Line-up as yet unsourced. MULLIN (2).
Action packed and towsy. Mullin shot Thistle into a 2-goal lead but slack defending let in Rangers. Thistle were best after h-t and Craig restored the 2-goal lead only for Rangers to score again. An exciting finish saw a 4th "goal" chopped off for off-side.
5. Sat-26-Aug-1972 [a] L0-3 Morton (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
ET 26/8/1972. Line-up as yet unsourced.
6. Mon-28-Aug-1972 [a] L1-3 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
ET 29/8/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. Final Position: 3rd of 4, 4/12 pts. Thistle were the only team to take a point off section winners Rangers.
7. Fri-01-Sep-1972 [a] D2-2 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
SC 2/2/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. SFHA says Dumbarton won 2-1 but our original notes say 2-2 and this is backed up by the DC/SC and the 4 game table published in the ET 30/9/1972.
8. Fri-08-Sep-1972 [h] W2-1 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 16/9/1972. SMITH, CRAIG. Line-up as yet unsourced.
An excellent win against Rangers who had £100,000 man Stein in their line-up. A Gibson corner was headed on by Craig to Smith who crashed it home but 5 mins later it was 1-1. On 55 mins Stamp went on a mazy run, beat three men and cut the ball back for Craig to score what proved to be the winner.
9. Sat-16-Sep-1972 [a] W2-1 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
AH 22/9/1972. Wright, Houston, Ralston, Smith (Charlie), McKinnon, Kellachan, Stamp, Mullin, SMITH (COLIN), DOCHERTY, Lochrie.
It was all Thistle and they had had numerous close things before Smith scored just on half-time. Arbroath levelled (65) but Docherty grabbed the winner from close in (78).
10. Sat-23-Sep-1972 [h] W6-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 30/9/1972. SMITH (2 pens), CRAIG (2), ADAMS (2). Line-up as yet unsourced.
Airdrie (unbeaten in 7) were overwhelmed. A Smith penalty was cancelled out before Craig scored in a goalmouth scramble. An Adams header made it 3-1 at h-t. Another Smith pen, Craig and Adams completed the scoring for a big win.
11. Sat-30-Sep-1972 [a] W5-0 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 30/9/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
12. Sat-07-Oct-1972 [h] W3-0 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 14/10/1972. LOCHRIE, ADAMS, STAMP. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Over 1000 saw one of the reserves' best performances of the season. Lochrie opened the scoring and Adams made it 2-0 with a turn and shot high in the net. Brown had some fine saves after h-t then Stamp cut inside and found the far corner.
13. Wed-11-Oct-1972 [a] W6-5 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 12/10/1972. STAMP, ADAMS, CRAIG (3), GIBSON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
14. Sat-21-Oct-1972 [a] W2-0 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 21/10/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
15. Sat-28-Oct-1972 [h] W2-0 East Fife (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 4/11/1972. McDOWALL, STAMP. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Munro (debut), McKinnon, Anderson and Lawrie.
Munro set up McDowall for the opener. Stamp got the second in inimitable fashion. He cut in on the right, sent several defenders the wrong way, feigned a shot the keeper tried to save only to find it never came leaving an open goal for Stamp to side foot the 2nd. Thistle were completely on top after half-time but it was goalless.
16. Sat-04-Nov-1972 [a] L1-3 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
AEE 4/11/1972. Gourlay, Reid, Gray, Docherty, McKinnon, Anderson, Lawrie, Smith, ADAMS, Houston, Munro.
A diving save denied Gray (4). A cross from the right was finished off by the Dons (6) then a header was cleared off the line. It was all Aberdeen pressure but Thistle hit back and Adams finished off a Lawrie cross for 1-1 (44). Smith missed a sitter and 2 quick goals late on meant a first defeat.
17. Sat-11-Nov-1972 [h] D2-2 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 18/11/1972. SMITH (COLIN), MUNRO. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A 20-yard drive put United ahead (6) but Thistle drew level when Stamp set up a move finished off by Colin Smith's header. Munro tapped in a parried save before h-t. The last kick of the game saw a shot off the bar deemed by the ref to have gone over the line. Disappointing, but still top.
18. Sat-18-Nov-1972 [a] D2-2 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 18/11/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
19. Sat-25-Nov-1972 [h] W4-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 25/11/1972 and HMFC. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
Thistle led 1-0 at half-time and although Hearts went ahead with goals in 67 and 69, three goals in the last 20 minutes saw the points in the bag. Still top of the league after 13 matches.
20. Mon-27-Nov-1972 [h] D1-1 Rangers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
MP 9/12/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. First round bye.
Thistle had the bulk of the pressure but had to settle for a 1-1 draw and a replay.
21. Thu-30-Nov-1972 [a] L0-2 Rangers (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round replay)
MP 9/12/1972. Line-up as yet unsourced.
With 2 players (McLean and Johnston) whose transfer fees combined were over £100,000, Rangers had much more to offer and ran out comfortable winners. The latter scored both goals.
22. Sat-02-Dec-1972 [h] W5-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 9/12/1972. REID, DOCHERTY, SMITH (COLIN), JOHNSTON, MULLIN. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Smith (Charlie), Munro.
Reid headed in a rebounded save off the keeper then Docherty increased the lead. Charlie Smith's cross was finished off by his namesake Colin before half-time. Stamp set up sub Johnston for the 4th then a shot through a ruck of players made it 4-1. Mullin ran on to a through ball and finished cooly for the 5th. Thistle remained top.
23. Mon-11-Dec-1972 [h] L1-2 Dumbarton (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 12/12/1972. STAMP. Line-up as yet unsourced.
24. Sat-16-Dec-1972 [h] W3-0 Dundee (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 23/12/1972. HANSEN (2), HOUSTON. Line-up as yet unsourced, but included, McKinnon, Kellachan, Rae (T), Stamp.
25. Sat-23-Dec-1972 [a] W1-0 St Johnstone (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 23/12/1972. Line-up as yet unsourced. RAE (T). Thistle entered 1973 in first place 1 point ahead of Aberdeen.
A rather dull 1st half saw little to enthuse over but after the break Thistle took a grip of the match with Smith, Docherty and Adams prominent. Smith's parried shot left Rae with a simple tap-in for the win (87). Top of the league.
26. Sat-06-Jan-1973 [h] L1-3 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
AH (12/1/1973) & MP (13/1/1973). Gourlay, Hansen, Kellachan, Smith, Anderson, Campbell, Stamp, MUNRO, Adams, Docherty. Lochrie.
Defeat saw Thistle deposed at the top of the league by Aberdeen. The side was severely weakened by a flu virus and this upset the rhythm of the side. Arbroath scored (1) and took a 3-goal lead in the 1st half before Adams (MP) or Munro (AH) scored for 3-1 (51).
27. Sat-13-Jan-1973 [a] W3-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 13/1/1973. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
28. Sat-27-Jan-1973 [a] W4-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 27/1/1973. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
29. Wed-31-Jan-1973 [h] W5-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 1/2/1973. MUNRO, HANSEN, LAWRIE, RAE (T), McQUADE. Line-up also included Campbell, Rae (A).
30. Sat-24-Feb-1973 [h] D2-2 Albion Rovers (Friendly)
MP 3/3/1973. RALSTON, MUNRO. Line-up as yet unsourced.
After a long spell idle, Thistle took on an experienced Rovers side (most probably their 1st XI) and took the lead through Ralston. The visitors equalised and went ahead before Munro levelled in the 2nd half for a creditable draw.
31. Sat-03-Mar-1973 [a] W2-1 East Fife (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 5/3/1973. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
32. Sat-10-Mar-1973 [h] W2-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
AEE 10/3/1973 & MP 17/3/1973. Gourlay, Donald, Ralston, Houston, Clark, Adams, Rae (T), MULLEN, McQuade, Kellachan, LOCHRIE.
2nd v 1st lived up to expectation. The defence stood up well to early pressure then Mullin scored from close in. His cross set up Lochrie to head home for 2-0. Aberdeen scored mid-way through the 2nd half but couldn't find an equaliser.
33. Sat-17-Mar-1973 [a] D2-2 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 17/3/1973. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
34. Sat-24-Mar-1973 [h] L1-2 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 31/3/1973. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
Things were looking good when McDowell fired Thistle into the lead. Fine goalkeeping kept the lead down to one. A deflected shot put things all square then a fast ground shot proved to be the winner.
35. Mon-26-Mar-1973 [a] L1-3 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 31/3/1973. SMITH. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Smith headed home a McQuade cross (13) to take a shock lead as Thistle dominated the first half. Rangers equalised (48) and a long shot cannoned off the keeper's body and went in. There was no way back.
36. Sat-31-Mar-1973 [a] L0-1 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 2/4/1973 and HMFC. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A goal mid-way through the second half from an intercepted pass-back by McKinnon that stuck in the mud was enough to take the points and severely dent Thistle's championship prospects.
37. Tue-03-Apr-1973 [a] D1-1 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 4/4/1973. McQUADE. Line-up as yet unsourced. Thistle hit the post 4 times in this match.
38. Sat-07-Apr-1973 [a] L2-4 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 7/4/1973. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
39. Sat-14-Apr-1973 [h] L0-2 Morton (Scottish Reserve League)
