scorers in CAPS • used subs in brackets
1. Sat-31-Jul-1971 [n] W2-1 Heart of Midlothian (Friendly)
HMFC. Shennan, Reid, Gray, Ralston, Clark, Campbell, Gibson, Logan. Johnston (R), Johnston (W), Rae. (DOCHERTY, McDOWALL.) Played at Dalbeattie during Civic Week.
Thistle trailed at half time to a goal from the penalty spot but after the break they equalised "unexpectedly" and scored the winner just on the final whistle.
2. Wed-11-Aug-1971 [a] W7-0 Sauchie Juniors (Friendly)
HA. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
3. Sat-14-Aug-1971 [a] W1-0 Brechin City (Friendly)
BA 19/8/1971. Dick, Logan, Ralston, Johnston (W), McKinnon, Campbell, Docherty, Millar, FORSYTH, Lochrie, Rae.
A faulty pass-back put Docherty in but he hit the keeper. Thistle missed a few chances to go ahead then it was Brechin's turn to hit the keeper. 0-0 at h-t, it was a tight game and the winner came from a blunder by the home defence when they let Forsyth in, vainly hoping for an off-side whistle.
4. Wed-18-Aug-1971 [h] W2-1 St Mirren (Friendly)
ET 19/8/1971. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced. Ralston broke his leg in this match.
5. Wed-25-Aug-1971 [a] W2-0 Hamilton Academical (Friendly)
GH 26/8/1971. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.

ET 4/9/1971. Dick, Gray (R), Gray, HANSEN, McKinnon, Johnston, Rae, Logan, Mullin, GLAVIN, Lochrie.
A poor clearance provided Hansen with the opener from close in (4). Rangers hit back with a couple of near misses. Dick had some saves to make then Rangers hit the bar. A first time shot by Glavin made it 2-0 (45). Report only to half-time.
7. Sat-11-Sep-1971 [h] W2-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 11/9/1971. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.

9. Mon-27-Sep-1971 [a] W5-1 Glasgow Perthshire (A. Greig Testimonial)
DR 28/9/1971. Brown, Anderson, Rowan, Smith, Clark, Johnstone, Docherty, RAE (T), Mullen, Houston, Lochrie. (McDOWALL (4). Bobby Houston ("Newman") played as a trialist and was signed after the game. Testimonial for Perthshire's A. Greig. Erroneously listed a charity match against Petershill in the match programme (2/10/1971).
Thistle trailed 1-0 to a penalty for a trip by Smith but the 2nd half was all theirs and a personal triumph for sub McDowall with 4 goals in 12 minutes. His three well-placed drives and a header from a Mullen corner followed a Rae (T) equaliser.
10. Sat-02-Oct-1971 [a] W3-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 2/10/1971. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.

DC 22/10/1971. Dick, Anderson, Gray, Docherty, McKinnon, Houston, Rae (T), Mullin, Logan, Johnston, Lochrie.
The first half belonged to Thistle but stout defending and poor finishing made it 0-0 at h-t. Dundee had a better 2nd half and had several good chances in the last 20 minutes but Thistle held on for the stalemate.
14. Sat-30-Oct-1971 [h] W3-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 30/10/1971. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.

HA. SMITH. Line-up as yet unsourced.
20. Sat-04-Dec-1971 [h] L0-2 East Fife (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 4/12/1971. Line-up as yet unsourced.
21. Sat-11-Dec-1971 [a] L2-6 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MT 17/12/1971. Dick, Anderson, Gray, Smith, McKinnon, Clark, Lochrie, Ralston, MULLIN (2), Johnston, Houston. Sub: Logan.
Mullin cracked in an unsaveable shot (2) to give Thistle the early advantage in this top of the table clash, but Motherwell came back strongly with 3 first half goals. Mullin's shot was deflected in (57) to offer hope, but another triple reply (59, 71, 85) kept the young 'Well side top of the league.
22. Sat-18-Dec-1971 [h] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 18/12/1971. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.

MP 15/1/1972. McDOWELL. Line-up as yet unsourced but included Bobby Gray & Charlie Smith.
26. Sat-15-Jan-1972 [a] D2-2 Dumbarton (Friendly)
MP 29/1/1972. SMITH (pen), JOHNSTON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
The young Thistle team performed creditably against what was virtually Dumbarton's 1st XI. Smith equalised from the spot but Dumbarton again went ahead only for Johnston to earn an excellent friendly draw.
27. Sat-22-Jan-1972 [h] D1-1 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 29/1/1972. MULLIN. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Thistle made enough chances to win the game but only had a Mullin goal to their credit. They let Kilmarnock back into it to level. The 2nd half was a dour midfield struggle on the heavy pitch.
28. Tue-25-Jan-1972 [a] L1-2 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 26/1/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.

33. Sat-26-Feb-1972 [h] W1-0 Albion Rovers (Friendly)
HA. Line-up as yet unsourced. LOCHRIE.
The Reserves continue to play attractive football and it was this that gave them a fine 1-0 win over Albion Rovers in this friendly. Archie Lochrie scored the only goal in a good game in which our young trialist goalkeeper came through very well.” ~ Jags Magazine, March, 1972.
34. Sat-04-Mar-1972 [a] D0-0 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
AEE 4/3/1972. Dick. Reid. Ralston, Doherty, Anderson, Gray, Rae, Mullin, McDowell, Johnstone, Houston.
Fine saves by Dick then when a 25-yarder hit the post kept Thistle from going behind. Poor defending let Mullin in but he missed an open goal. Thistle survived 2 pen claims, the ref overruling the linesman for the second. It was all Aberdeen but they held on for a point.
35. Sat-11-Mar-1972 [h] D1-1 Dundee United (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 18/3/1972. RAE or LOGAN. Both prodded the ball over the line. Line-up as yet unsourced.
36. Sat-18-Mar-1972 [a] D1-1 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 18/3/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
37. Sat-25-Mar-1972 [h] W6-1 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/4/1972. MULLIN (2), McDOWALL (2), HOUSTON, DOCHERTY. Line-up as yet unsourced.
A sparkling six goal romp when everything seemed to go for them on the day. They led 5-0 at h-t. Easing off after the interval saw a 6th goal (Docherty) scored before a late consolation for Hibs.
38. Thu-30-Mar-1972 [h] L1-2 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 8/4/1972. MULLIN. Line-up as yet unsourced.
After drawing level before h-t Thistle missed three great chances to go ahead. Celtic dominated after h-t and scored to take the points. Rather unfortunate not to take a point.
39. Sat-08-Apr-1972 [a] D2-2 East Fife (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 8/4/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
40. Tue-11-Apr-1972 [h] D2-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Semi Final)
GH 12/4/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
41. Sat-15-Apr-1972 [h] W4-3 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
MP 22/4/1972. HOUSTON, RAE (2), LOCHRIE. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Houston opened the scoring to finish off an excellent spell but Motherwell levelled before h-t. Rae put Thistle ahead. Lochrie extended it to 3-1. Motherwell reduced the deficit. Rae made it 4-2 before Motherwell got a 3rd in an exciting finish.
42. Sat-22-Apr-1972 [a] L1-4 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 22/4/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
43. Mon-24-Apr-1972 [a] W1-0 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Semi Final replay)
GH 25/4/1972. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
44. Thu-27-Apr-1972 [a] D2-2 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 28/4/1972. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
45. Fri-28-Apr-1972 [h] L0-1 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 29/4/1974. Line-up as yet unsourced.
46. Wed-03-May-1972 [a] W2-0 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Final, 1st leg)
DC 4/5/1972. Dick, Ralston, Gray, Smith, McKinnon, Campbell, Gibson, Rae (T), MULLIN, Johnston (DOCHERTY, 71 mins), Lawrie.
Brilliant goalkeeping by the Pars keeper McGarr gave Dunfermline a slim chance of lifting the cup. Mullin slammed home a Gibson cross (20). After that it was Thistle v McGarr until sub Docherty scored to set up the 2nd leg.
47. Fri-05-May-1972 [h] W1-0 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish 2nd XI Cup Final, 2nd leg)
DR 6/5/1972. Agg 3-0. Dick, Ralston, Gray, SMITH (pen), McKinnon, Campbell, Gibson, Mullin, McDowall, Docherty, Lochrie. Johnston came on for Gray at half-time. The season ends as it began - with a cup! Captain Donnie McKinnon lifted the trophy.
Dunfermline made every effort to get back into the tie and there were some anxious moments as they created several good chances - especially before h-t. When Lochrie was pulled down in the box Smith scored with the pen to put the aggregate score beyond the Pars.
