– This is our only unknown game from 'Series 1' of the Combined Reserve League 1970-71 in which 10 clubs played each other twice for an 18 game campaign. We've construced this 4-2 away win to Clydebank on the basis that the PT Handbook is correct with a final table of P18 W15 D2 L1 F75 A19. Our figures square exactly with that summary based on this result. There is no rationale for our nominal date, other than we've presumed the match was played before the commencement of 'Series 2', which was intended as another round of the same clubs playing each other twice.

  • The Combined Reserve League was actually two mini league series either side of Christmas/New Year. 10 clubs were to play each other twice for an 18 game league until January (series 1) then repeat the same formula of 10 clubs / 18 games for series 2 until the end of the season. Thistle were champions for both series. Our only unsourced game from series 1 is the Clydebank away, but according to the PT handbook (which reports a final 18 game tally-up) it was played and we've therefore deduced it would be a 4-2 win for Thistle. Thistle were champions with a record of P18, W15, D2, L1, F75, A19. Per the SFHA results grid (and our own Thistle knowledge) it looks certain that no club completed series 2. Indeed, Alloa withdrew from the second series in March 1971. In that second series, our missing 7 includes: Clydebank (H), East Stirlingshire (A), Stirling Albion (H), Alloa Athletic (A), Alloa Athletic (H), Dumbarton (A) and Dumbarton (H). Of these, 3 were definitely played as, according to the PT handbook, we played 14 of our scheduled 18 games with a record of P14, W13, D0, L1, F61, A16. When comparing to our 11 known results we are missing 3 wins (from the aforementioned 7) with an aggregate score of 7-1.
  • As the PT handbook tells, over the 2 series of CRL matches, the young JAGS played 32, won 28, drew 2 and lost 2. They scored an incredible 136 goals and conceded only 35.
