1959-60 (Reserves)
The 85th season of Partick Thistle F.C.
scorers in CAPS
1. Sat-08-Aug-1959 [a] D1-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
ET 8/8/1959. Fleck, Brown, Thomson (R), McIntyre, Kennedy, Calder, Thomson (W), Forrester, Nimmo, Healy, Goldie. Scorer as yet unsourced.
Airdrie dominated and should have been 2 or 3 goals up at the break but they changed over just 1 goal to the good. Thistle made no impression on a solid Airdrie defence. Report only to half-time.
2. Wed-12-Aug-1959 [h] L0-3 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
GH 13/8/1959. Line-up as yet unsourced.
3. Sat-15-Aug-1959 [h] D2-2 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
FFP 22/8/1959. Fleck, Brown, Thomson (R), McIntyre, Kennedy, Calder, THOMSON (N), Healey, NIMMO, Keenan, Goldie.
A fine header put Rovers ahead (7) then Keenan and Goldie were unlucky not to score before Thomson levelled (deservedly) 1 minute from the interval. Nimmo gave Thistle the lead rounding the keeper but Rovers levelled near the end.
4. Wed-19-Aug-1959 [a] L0-5 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
AG 22/8/1959. Fleck, Brown, Thomson, McIntyre, Kennedy, Calderwood, Muir, Healy, Nimmo, Keenan, Forrester.
2,269 witnessed this Wednesday night drubbing. Thistle, who looked the better side but flattered to deceive, trailed 2-0 at half-time (goals 2 and 14) although Forrester and Healy both hit woodwork. All 5 Arbroath forwards scored - the last three soon after half-time, 75 and 89 mins.
5. Sat-22-Aug-1959 [h] W1-0 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
SFHA. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
6. Tue-25-Aug-1959 [a] L0-6 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
GH 26/8/1959. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up included McIntyre - he scored an og.
7. Sat-29-Aug-1959 [a] W2-1 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League Cup section game)
GH/FFP. Curran, Wright, THOMSON, Closs McKinnon, Hastings, Ferns, Cunningham, FLETCHER, Sim, Fleming.
A poor game all round. Thomson (L) gave Thistle the lead with a neat header (40) after a series of miskicks and mistakes in the Rovers defence. An og doubled the lead (51) but it was reduced (57). An equaliser was beyond them.
8. Fri-04-Sep-1959 [h] D2-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 5/9/1959. Fleck, Orr, Thomson (R), BROWN (pen), Kennedy, Calder, Thomson (L), McIntyre, Nimmo, FERNS, Winter.
9. Sat-19-Sep-1959 [h] W2-1 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 19/9/1959. Fleck, Muir, Thomson (R), KEENAN, Kennedy, Healey, Bain, McIntyre, Nimmo, Ferns, Ewing. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced.
Aberdeen's No 11 was a constant threat but he had no support. Thistle were the more aggressive and Ewing went close twice. He touched a free-kick on the edge of the box to Keenan who smashed it home (24). Report only to half-time.
10. Sat-26-Sep-1959 [a] L1-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 26/9/1959. Fleck, Muir, Thomson (R), Keenan, Kennedy, Wright, Bain, Wynn, Nimmo, Wilson, Goldie. Scorer as yet unsourced.
There was not much between the teams. Thistle trailed 1-0 at half-time but they had had several chances. Goldie's shot was well saved and Wright hit the post. Report only to half-time.
11. Sat-03-Oct-1959 [h] W2-1 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 3/10/1959. Fleck, Muir, Thomson (R), Keenan, Kennedy, Wright, Bain, Hastings, Nimmo, FERNS, Fleming. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced.
A Ferns goal from a Nimmo cross (4) gave Thistle an early lead then Bain, Ferns and Nimmo tested the keeper. Motherwell had chances too. They missed a six-yard sitter and Fleck had a fine save approaching the interval. Report only to half-time.
12. Fri-09-Oct-1959 [a] W4-2 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 10/10 & Irvine Herald 16/10/1959. GOLDIE (3), KEENAN. Line-up as yet unsourced but included trialist in goal Curran of Largs Thistle - son of former Thistle favourite Peter Curran.
13. Wed-14-Oct-1959 [a] L1-2 Hibernian (Scottish 2nd XI Cup 2nd Round)
GH 15/10/1959. GOLDIE. Line-up as yet unsourced. First round bye.
14. Sat-17-Oct-1959 [h] D3-3 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
FFP 24/10/1959. Fleck, Muir, BROWN, McIntyre, Kennedy, Healey, McKenzie, Bain, NIMMO, Ferns, THOMSON (L).
Thistle were 2-up in 5 minutes. Thomson opened the scoring from a Bain cross then Brown's free-kick completely deceived the keeper. Two goals before the break wiped out the lead. Nimmo scored after half-time only for a leveller to come from the pen spot.
15. Sat-24-Oct-1959 [a] L0-2 Stirling Albion (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 24/10/1959. Line-up as yet unsourced.
16. Sat-31-Oct-1959 [h] L0-1 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 31/10/1959. Curran, McIntyre, Thomson (R), Calder, Healey, Brown, Bain, Cunningham, Goldie, Wilson, Nimmo.
There was hardly anything for either keeper to do apart from a Davidson effort that was saved at full stretch. In keeping with both sets of forwards' lack of involvement, the winner came from a Healey pass-back og. Report only to half-time.
17. Sat-07-Nov-1959 [h] L2-4 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 7/11/1959. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
18. Sat-14-Nov-1959 [a] L0-3 Dundee (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 14/11/1959. Line-up as yet unsourced.
19. Sat-21-Nov-1959 [h] W5-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 21/11/1959. Curran, Brown, Thomson (R), Keenan, Kennedy, Calder, Thomson (W), Bain, NIMMO (2), Simpson, DEVINE. Remaining scorers as yet unsourced.
Nimmo hit the post in the first few minutes and fired the rebound inches wide but he made up for it by scoring (39) and again before Devine made it 3-0 seconds later. Report only to half-time.
20. Fri-27-Nov-1959 [a] L0-1 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 28/11/1959. Line-up as yet unsourced.
Sat-05-Dec-1959 [h] U?-? Celtic (Friendly)
ET 5/12/1959. Curran, Brown, Hastings, McIntyre, McKinnon, Calder, Thomson (W), Bain, Nimmo, Ferns, Winter. Potential scorer(s) as yet unsourced.
It was a robust friendly. Curran was the busier keeper. The Thistle forwards were well held by the Celtic defence. Report only to half-time.
21. Sat-12-Dec-1959 [a] D2-2 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 12/12/1959. Fleck, Brown, Thomson (R), Keenan, Davidson, Calder, Thomson (W), Bain, NIMMO, Closs, Winter. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced. First sighting of Davie "Santa" Closs.
A free-kick touched to the side was fired home for a deserved lead on pressure. A second goal gave Saints a 2-goal lead but Nimmo headed home before half-time. Report only to half-time.
Sat-12-Dec-1959 [a] U?-? Hamilton Academical (Friendly)
3rd XI. 2nd XI played same day. [May not have been played.]
22. Sat-19-Dec-1959 [a] L1-5 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 19/12/1959. Curran, Brown, Thomson (R), Keenan, Davidson, Hastings, MacKenzie, McDonald, Thomson (L), Nimmo, THOMSON (W).
Thomson lobbed the keeper for 1-0 early on but after that Davidson played at goalkeeper and top of the table Hibs equalised with the penalty for hand ball. Thistle remained 4th bottom. Report only to half-time.
23. Sat-19-Dec-1959 [a] L1-3 East Stirlingshire (Friendly)
ET 19/12/1959. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. This is the "3rd XI" played same day as the main reserves.
24. Sat-26-Dec-1959 [h] W3-0 Arbroath (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 26/12/1959 & Arbroath Herald 1/1/1960. Curran, Brown, Thomson (R), Newman, Davidson, Calder, Goldie, BAIN (2), Nimmo, Wilson, THOMSON (W).
Curran had a couple of good saves then went off injured for 20 minutes. He was scarcely missed. Thomson put Thistle ahead (65) then Bain broke through to make it 2-0 (69). He scored his second late on.
25. Sat-02-Jan-1960 [h] D1-1 Third Lanark (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 2/1/1960. Curran, McIntyre, Thomson (R), Hastings, Davidson, Calder, Thomson (W), BAIN, Thomson (L), Ferns, Goldie.
A Thistle attack in 12 minutes saw Bain scoring from an acute angle. Five minutes later it was all square from a shot out wide. Thistle's forwards looked the more dangerous but the half and the match ended in a draw. Report only to half-time.
26. Sat-09-Jan-1960 [a] W2-0 Aberdeen (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 9/1/1960. Curran, Hogan, Thomson (R), Keenan, Davidson, Calder, MacKenzie, Bain, SIMPSON, Wilson, Thomson (W). Remaining scorer as yet unsourced.
Bain saw an early shot well saved but the opener wasn't long delayed. Simpson neatly flicked in a cross from Thomson for 1-0 - thoroughly deserved. Aberdeen hit the bar approaching half-time. Report only to half-time.
Wed-13-Jan-1960 [h] U?-? Dumbarton (Friendly)
3rd XI. ET mentioned this friendly twice, latterly as a chance for Hogan to play along with the “3rd XI youngsters” to test his fitness after a cartilage operation. He had made his comeback on the 9th but took a bad cut on his nose (2 stitches). ET (14/1) says he was to get the stitches out “tonight” but frustratingly there is no trace of a reference to the match being played the night before.
27. Fri-15-Jan-1960 [h] L1-3 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 16/1/1960. Curran, Muir, Thomson (R), Keenan, Davidson, Calder, MacKenzie, Bain, Simpson, WILSON, Thomson (W).
28. Sat-23-Jan-1960 [a] L2-4 Motherwell (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 23/1/ & MT 29/1/1960. Curran, Brown, Thomson (R), Keenan, Davidson, Hastings, MacKenzie, SIMPSON (2), Goldie, Wilson, Thomson (W).
Motherwell's youngsters led 2-0 at half-time but Simpson levelled matters only for Motherwell to score twice more. The MT mentioned that Davidson, MacKenzie and Simpson (Ireland) had been World Cup squad members. MacKenzie (aged 34) was singled out as still being "a tantalizing" player.
29. Fri-05-Feb-1960 [h] W1-0 Kilmarnock (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 6/2/1960. VALLELY. Line-up as yet unsourced. The scorer, John Vallely (ex Milton Battlefield), was a trialist from Baillieston Juniors.
30. Fri-12-Feb-1960 [h] D2-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 13/2/1960. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
31. Tue-01-Mar-1960 [h] L1-2 Stirling Albion (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 2/3/1960. SIMPSON. Line-up as yet unsourced.
32. Sat-05-Mar-1960 [a] D2-2 Dunfermline Athletic (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 5/3/1960. Fleck, Muir, Thomson (R), Wright, Davidson, Hastings, Thomson (W), Bain, Simpson, Sim, Ferns. Scorers as yet insourced.
Both teams made chances but their forwards were poor and they weren't taken. The keepers were a match for anything they faced. Report only to half-time.
33. Wed-09-Mar-1960 [a] W2-1 Third Lanark (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 10/3/1960. Line-up and scorers as yet unsourced.
34. Sat-12-Mar-1960 [a] L1-2 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 12/3/1960. Freebairn, McIntyre, Thomson (R), Keenan, Kennedy, Calder, Bain, Cunningham, Nimmo, Hastings, Ferns. Scorer as yet unsourced.
Nimmo wasted a 1-on-1 with the keeper early on then Hearts took up the running - missing several good chances. Eventually the pressure told and a hooked shot past Freebairn put them ahead. Report only to half-time.
35. Fri-18-Mar-1960 [h] L0-3 Dundee (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 19/3/1960. Line-up as yet unsourced.
36. Sat-26-Mar-1960 [a] W2-1 Airdrieonians (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 26/3/1960. Curran, Muir, Wright, McIntyre, Kennedy, Calder, Bain, Wilson, Devine, Sim, Ferns. Scorers as yet unsourced.
A strong shot well saved by Curran woke Thistle up then a Bain header from a corner by Ferns was kicked off the line. The first half was almost devoid of incident. Report only to half-time.
37. Fri-01-Apr-1960 [h] L0-4 Celtic (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 2/4/1960. Line-up as yet unsourced.
38. Wed-13-Apr-1960 [a] D1-1 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League)
SFHA. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced.
39. Sat-16-Apr-1960 [a] W4-2 Ayr United (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 16/4/1960. Curran, Muir, Wright (D), Calder, McIntyre, Cunningham, Bain, SIMPSON, FERNS, Wilson, Devine. Remaining scorers as yet unsourced.
Simpson was lying handy to fire home a blocked shot by Wilson (3). Straight from the restart, Thistle took possession, ran up the park and Ferns made it 2-0. Ayr pulled one back and Curran's fine save denied them an equaliser (45). Report only to half-time.
40. Sat-23-Apr-1960 [h] D2-2 St Mirren (Scottish Reserve League)
ET 23/4/1960. Fleck, Muir, Wright (D), Hinshelwood, Staite, Newman, Devine, Simpson, FERNS, Wilson, Ewing. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced.
Thistle survived early pressure unscathed then Simpson had a header well saved. Ferns wated a good chance created by Ewing but he gave Thistle a deserved 1-0 lead with a rising shot (42). Report only to half-time.
41. Mon-25-Apr-1960 [a] L0-4 Raith Rovers (Scottish Reserve League)
FFP 30/4/1960. Craig, Muir, Wright, Newman, McKinnon, Cunningham, Bain, Simpson, Fearns, Wilson, Devine.
The 1st half was tight and goalless but after the break Thistle were decidedly second best. Goals 63, 75, 76 and 84 underlined how much better Rovers were. Devine was Thistle's biggest threat but he too faded after half-time.
42. Thu-28-Apr-1960 [h] L0-4 Hibernian (Scottish Reserve League)
GH 29/4/1960. Line-up as yet unsourced.
