There was nothing between the teams at all and it took a free-kick just outside the box in the last minute to separate them. A solid defensive display kept Thistle's forwards out.

Queen's did most of the attacking, Thistle the defending. A rare effort by Crawford was well saved then after spurning a couple of good chances Queens went ahead (21). A header doubled the lead 6 mins later. Report only to h-t.

ET 29/9/1956. Thomson, Collins, Donlevy, Thomson (B), McNab, Steel, MacKenzie, Crowe, MALLON, Crawford, Stark.
There were close things at both ends then Crowe was set up by a MacKenzie cross to put Thistle ahead (19). A terrific passing move deserved better than a shot just wide then Crowe was carried off injured. Report only to h-t.

A header came off the bar and the rebound was headed in (2) then McParland went off injured for treatment. He returned after 15 minutes just in time to see Crawford's magnificent 25-yard drive hit the net. Report only to h-t.

GH 25/10 & MT 26/10/1956. NEWMAN. Line-up as yet unsourced. Line-up also included Hamilton (GK). "Newman" was Stevenson of Renfrew Juniors FC.
Hard, fast and entertaining. Motherwell had the best of the first half, Thistle the second. Two goals (14 and 19) set Thistle back. "Newman" had an effort kicked off the line but he scored (65). Motherwell missed a penalty late on.

ET 27/10/1956. Trialist, Ralston, Donlevy, Thomson, Wilkinson, Harvey, Baird, McNab, Mallon, Steel, Brown.
Dundee had most of the play and chances and Thistle's trialist keeper was busy. They hit the post then a penalty was converted for 1-0 at the break. Report only to h-t.

Mallon gave Thistle an early lead (4) then Harvey doubled the score 5 minutes later. Airdrie came back into it and Smith had some work to do then Mallon was injured and helped off with half-time approaching. Report only to h-t.

A 30-yard shot beat Thomson (11) and the scorer doubled his tally (24). Thistle were seldom out of their own half. Collins and Hastings were both off the field for attention during the first half. Report only to h-t.

Ayr thought they'd taken the lead but the whistle blew for an infringement. Thomson put Thistle ahead (23) then Henderson doubled the lead before the interval. Report only to h-t.

Henderson's powerful drive put Thistle 1-up then Mallon made it 2-0 (10). Report only to h-t.

Both teams played attractive football and it was St Mirren who took the lead (15). Ten minutes later Wilson was brought down and Brown converted the penalty. Just on half-time McGill put Thistle ahead. Report only to h-t.

Hearts had the best of things early on and deservedly took the lead with a perfect header. Thistle got on top towards half-time and Brown converted a penalty for hand ball for 1-1. Report only to h-t.

McParland gave Thistle an early lead then Wilson made it 2-0 (24). Brown's penalty was saved a few minutes later. Airdrie had decent spells but throughout the game were unable to beat Thistle's off-side trap. They scored late on for 4-1.

Hogan finished off a Wilson pass then two goals from McParland made it 3-0. Hibs pulled one back at a corner but Wilson fired in from long distance for a 4-1 lead at h-t. Hibs reduced the lead after h-t but Thistle saw the game out comfortably.
