1945-46 (Reserves) |
The 71st season of Partick Thistle F.C. |
scorers in CAPS | |
1. Sat-11-Aug-1945 [h] W3-2 Hamilton Academical (Scottish Reserve League) |
– ET 11/8/1945. McFarlane, Stewart, Houston, Brown, Smith, Mackie, McLean, McInnes, DOONAN (2), Walker, Lang. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced. |
– A header put Accies ahead (4). Doonan hit the bar then he took a McLean pass to equalise soon after. Thistle found their opponents a lively lot and it was no surprise they went ahead - a fine move - but Doonan scored just on half-time. Report only to half-time. |
2. Sat-18-Aug-1945 [a] L1-3 Heart of Midlothian (Scottish Reserve League) |
– SP 19/8/1945. Line-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
3. Fri-24-Aug-1945 [h] D2-2 Rangers (Scottish Reserve League) |
– GH 25/4/1945. WALLACE, McINNES. Line-up as yet unsourced. |

– LNH. McFarlane, Stewart, Houston, Brown (E), Campbell, Darling, t, O'DONNELL, FINN, PICKEN, Lang. Fund raiser for Vale of Leven FC. |
– Against the run of play Rangers scored twice (5 and 8) but O'Donnell and Picken levelled only for Rangers to go ahead just on half-time. They scored again and Finn scored just on the final whistle. |
5. Sat-01-Sep-1945 [a] L1-4 Morton (Scottish Reserve League) |
– SP 2/9/1945. Liner-up and scorer as yet unsourced. |
6. Mon-03-Sep-1945 [h] L0-1 Maryhill (Harry Gillies Benefit) |
– ET 4/9/1945. 6.45pm kick-off. Line-up as yet unsourced. Benefit for Maryhill's left winger, who'd been hospitalized for a year. |
– A tremendous turnout of 4,000, thought to be near a record for a junior benefit, helped to create a bit of a cup-tie atmosphere. Skelton got the winner at the death, with no time left to centre the ball. |
7. Fri-07-Sep-1945 [h] L1-2 Clyde (Scottish Reserve League) |
– DR 8/9/1945. McFarlane, Stewart, Houston, Brown, j, Darling, Smith, Wright, Wilson, BLACK, Lang. |
– Clyde took the lead (20) and 4 minutes later a penalty awarded after a goalmouth scramble was converted for 2-0. In the second half Thistle were a different team and Black scored “a brilliant effort” but it was all they could manage. The game was lost in the first half. |
8. Sat-15-Sep-1945 [a] W7-0 Queen of the South (Scottish Reserve League) |
– DGS 19/9/1945. McFarlane, Stewart, Houston, Darling, Smith, Hall, McIntyre, WRIGHT (2), DOONAN (4), McDonald, LANG. |
– Queens had their chances but couldn't take them whereas Thistle were “the more purposeful and better balanced side”. A header by Doonan and a goal by Lang made it 2-0 at half-time. Three more for Doonan and two for Wright made it a slightly flattering score line. |
8. Sat-22-Sep-1945 [h] W4-3 Queen's Park (Scottish Reserve League) |

– EEN 10/11/1945. Wilson, Stewart, Houston, Brown, Adams, Bonthrone, Braidwood, SMITH, Stockdale, Doonan, Black. |
– Thistle took the lead against the run of the play, Stockdale flicking past a defender for Smith to shoot past the 'keeper, just after the half-hour mark. Thistle's luck didn't hold out and they simply couldn't cope with the eager Hibs forwards who rattled in 7 second half goals. |
17. Sat-17-Nov-1945 [h] W1-0 Falkirk (Scottish Reserve League) |
– FH 24/11/1945. McFarlane, Ewart, Cameron, Adams, Johnston, Hynds, Campbell, MACKIE, Stockdale, Bonthrone, Glover. |
– Falkirk had as much of the play and chances as Thistle but their forwards were poor and Thistle's defence was robust. The only goal came from Mackie when he headed home a free-kick (24) for the narrow win. |

– KH 1/2/1946. WRIGHT. Line-up as yet unsourced. Remaining scorer as yet unsourced. |
– Thistle trailed 2-0 at half-time through goals in 25 minutes and just on the whistle. They did reduce the deficit but Kilmarnock restored their 2-goal lead. Wright scored towards the end but a stout Killie defence held out to take both points. |

– MT 8/2/1946. "Newman", Brown, Stewart, Wilson, Davidson, Darling, Glover, McIntyre, DOONAN, O'DONNELL, McGeachy. |
– A lively and robust match saw chances at both ends but it was Falkirk who scored before half-time. They were 3-up before Doonan scored then 4-1 before O'Donnell reduced the lead but it wasn't enough. Falkirk's No 3 was sent off late on. |

– It was mostly Kilmarnock early on with Thistle only showing occasionally. They fell behind following a free-kick (25). Thistle were the better team in the 2nd half but Kilmarnock managed to hold on to their slender lead until the end. |
